Oh, the romantic subplot...

I put off reading this for a long time, because I expected it to be a sad story of coping after slavery...What I found was a book about a woman discovering her sexuality, finding love in unlikely places, and developing her own spirituality. I highly recommend that you ignore initial assumptions about the book and read it for yourself!

Favorite Jane Austen book, hands-down. It brings together not one, but two heart-wrenching romances, and her biting wit and views on Regency society. Half of the story is about how women use their own means to connive and get what they want, at the cost of others’ happiness. The other half is about how giving up happiness can be horrible. Elinor is one of my favorite literature heroines and her ending is one of the happiest I’ve read. I’m not as a huge fan of Marianne (or Willoughby for that matter), but you still feel for her. A classic in the truest sense of the word.

Much like Eragon - good fun, but more plot-driven than literary.

If you've read all the 1 star reviews, then you know that this book is clearly Harry Potter fan-fiction. The Harry Potter parallels were obvious when reading City of Bones, but I didn't care! I loved the story and the action. Also, I liked that Cassandra Clare used a lot of humor and had the balls to write an incest-themed story line.

A very well thought out book with a message that starts out subtle but becomes more overt toward the end

Excellent! Set in Canada. Ambrose is a nerd whose newest way of coping with a new school and with his social difficulties is through a series of lies and by attending a Scrabble Club with the ex-con son of his landlord. In some ways, the book reminded me of Waiting for Normal in that there are clearly some deep, serious issues at work and Ambrose's mom clearly has some coping issues of her own, but they don't necessarily weigh down your spirits as you read Ambrose's story. The story is balanced with plenty of humor and an interesting cast of characers (greek landlords, the ex-con Cosmo, and the relatively wholesome knitter/Scrabble player Amanda).

In which Artemis is not himself and Orion isn't Artemis either. It had a beginning, a middle and an end, which is often a plus, and wrapped up well, but despite the fact that it was packed with stuff happening I sort of found it a bit lifeless. It feels like an odd and possibly unfair complaint, but I finished the book feeling that it was all a bit too smooth and polished. Artemis has developed a mental disorder/disability which seriously impairs his ability to function and for much of action Artemis is out of action, and we find ourselves stuck with a seriously annoying twit called Orion instead. But I'm pleased to say that Colfer doesn't, I don't think, make any cheap jokes out mental disability. More twins (they have grown on me) and more No1 (still love him).
