What's the hype?

Barbara Gowdy has the uncanny ability to make you feel you "are there" in her novels. A story of love, wanting to be loved, heartbreak, forgiveness and relationships that endure through anything. From back cover: "Louise Kirk learns about love and loss at an early age. When she is nine years old, her former beauty queen mother "disappears", leaving a note that reads only-and incorrectly-"Louise knows how to work the washing machine." Not long after, the Richters and their adopted son, Abel, move in across the street. Louise's immediate devotion to the exotic and motherly Mrs. Richter is quickly transferred to her nature-loving, precociously intelligent son, and from this childhood friendship evolves a love that will bind Louise and Abel for the rest of their lives."

After a man's wife and baby die in a car accident, he can't seem to move on with life. He spends most of his time caring for the crosses he erected at the site, and neglects his little girl who is still alive. One day when he goes to tend the crosses, a "mysterious stranger" is taking care of his gardening duties. This "stranger" helps the man move on with his life. Sometimes we get stuck in the past and can't move forward. If that's a problem, this book is for you.

I think probably everyone has read this book already, but if you haven't, I can tell you that it is a lot better than the movie. In fact, forget there even was a movie. If you're hankering for an epic love story that crosses boundaries of space and time, (isn't everyone?) look no further.
This is my first Phyne Fisher book. After having read so many good things about her, I was disappointed in this outing. I found the chemistry and the information on Jewish religion overwhelming. Not being an expert in either, it was just TMI for me, more than I wanted and more than I thought was necessary to the plot. All that said, I have since read reviews of the other books, and will give another one a try. I liked the setting and am curious about the recurring characters.
I thought it brought up a lot of good points, but offered no solutions. Ultimately, I don't think I felt as bad as I was supposed to.

Delightful
Salt, a World History is more than just a history book. Kurlansky knows how to write about such subjects (he has another book on cod (i think) fish) in an entertaining way. If you're wanting to know more, all you really have to do is read the first few pages. If nothing else, it's a great bathroom reader or conversation starter piece. Bon appetite! (It's my favorite book on the subject of salt. ;) )
