As a school librarian, this book made me cringe. The desperation, bullying and coping mechanisms Fanboy and Kyra use to protect themselves felt all too familiar and painful. Inspite of the OMG factor, I found myself rooting for both Kyra and Fanboy when they were forced to interact with their school's discipline administrator. I was amazed at Fanboy's keen observations throughout the book as he experienced his daily life, for example:"Miss Channing, forgetting that I'm right here, mumbles something fairly unprofessional under her breath as she picks up the phone. I never realized that adults could be so petty and hate each other too. I thought that as the exclusive providence of kids. I don't know whether this news is heartwarming or depressing." This is a book I'll recommend to students--because so many of them will really relate to the awkwardness and drama that Fanboy encounters on a daily basis. The fact that the story is narrated from a boy's point of view makes it an especially good choice for guys. A parting line from the book (it made me chuckle)--dark librarian humor: " May God forever damn librarians and their need to help!" (I guess it's not a great idea to always assume that everyone wants or needs help :)....

This book was fascinating! Well, let me revise that a little bit. This book was fascinating, but.... Gladwell introduces Outliers with an incredible premise that grabs the reader immediately: the concept of the "self-made man" is a fallacy. That is to say, the idea that anyone from poverty can simply work hard and, with a little bit of ingenuity and gumption, pull himself up by his bootstraps and enjoy great success is only a fairy tale version of the story. What Gladwell asks us to do is, through a series of chapters designed to clarify various aspects of his argument, is to cast aside this fallacy and take a more critical look at this story and evaluate what is fact and what is fiction. Initially, this is immensely engaging and I found myself being swept up in argument. However, the more I read, the less impressed I became. Ultimately (and I am paring this down a good bit), Gladwell's argument is that individuals who are successful become so because they are born at just the right time, get a lot of practice at what they do well, and luck into a number of opportunities that help them become successful. So let me get this straight....successful people are born with some talent, luck into a number of opportunities, more often than not come from well-off families, and work hard at what they're good at? That's not a revelation. That's common sense! This is not to say that Gladwell's book is not an enjoying read. It is. My difficulty with it is that the argument behind it doesn't really say anything new, and, I would argue, Gladwell takes an overly simplistic view of things in order to make his book more entertaining and widely accessible.

Oh Melina. How you break my heart. I feel broken while I read your words. Every emotion is sharply felt. The pain and joy is palpable. While I read the Piper's Son I simply ached for Tom. I wanted him to be happy, to forgive and be forgiven. I simply have no clue how Melina does it. How does she take such simple lives and make them extraordinary? I am in awe. I will add that I listened to this book on audiobook and the narrator really became Tom for me and I think influenced my love for this book. The only bad thing about reading a Melina book is that you feel drained and a little empty when you are done because you invest yourself so much in the characters and the story, but if that is the only bad thing I can live with it.

An excellent exploration of how the history and reality of white supremacy, racism, and class effect the lives of blacks and whites growing up in the Northwest United States. The gathering of a team of basketball players from two different racial and economic areas of Seattle in 1986 may set the stage, but this is far from a sports book, the summer season they played given minimal time. Instead, Merlino uses this sports hook to lead us through the history of Jim Crow to the Civil Rights era, right up into the 1980's--including the increasing incarceration of the community. He also gives a history of blacks in Seattle, as well as their continued marginalization. The individual players he was able to contact twenty years after they played together are given plenty of space, along with part of their family history. Merlino excels at describing an interaction with someone, then moving to their words, then moving back in history to highlight a point or reality. Highly recommended.

This sixth book in the Virgin River series leaves me with mixed feelings. Oh, it's always great to be back in Virgin River and to be reunited with Jack and Mel, but it seems that in this book there were too many stories going on all at once, instead on really focusing on one main story.
