This book was a quick read for me, which was refreshing after reading the clunker I just finished by Wally Lamb (it was a great book, don't get me wrong, but EPIC!) I gave it three stars because I couldn't quite get a finger on the main character, Lillian. The story was interesting, sad in many parts, and I enjoyed the time period and historical references. However, her journey seemed undeveloped in certain parts and there was a definite lack of denouement. I think if Wally Lamb had written this novel then it could have been a 1500 page story. She does trek across American and up to Alaska! However, this story has shy of 300 pages - there just wasn't enough time to develop every character and detail Lillian's journey. I was suprisingly satisfied with the ending. Not what you except. That alone may be a good reason to tempt you to read this book.

Epic Fail Reading this book made me really happy.
Whoa. This memoir is extremely dark, extremely depressing. About midway through I developed an acute sense of anxiety and even paranoia. I’m not sure if it’s a tribute to the writer’s style or a testimony to the bleakness of the book. This is written by the daughter of Pulitzer Prize winning poet Anne Sexton. I mistakenly assumed it was a tale of growing up with a severely depressed mother who attempted suicide numerous times before succeeding (I guess her first memoir tackles this). While that’s part of it, it is mostly about the author’s own struggles with mental illness and the “suicide legacy” she inherited from her mother. This book is well-written but often times exhausting. The repetition of words (nonplussed), ideas (her inner voice chiding her), and acts (sleeping all day) got to be a little much. Although I suppose it is an accurate reflection of the writer’s state of mind. I picked this up because there seems to be a rash of suicides lately amongst my contemporaries, no one close to me but it’s affected me all the same. I wanted to understand the mindset a little better. I can’t say that I do but I guess that’s to be expected. I do have a more generous viewpoint than some (e.g. I don’t automatically think “it’s selfish!”) I guess because it’s so unfathomable to me I can’t even be judgmental about it. It would be like judging someone who is color blind. “Why can’t you see that’s red??!” My brain can’t even go there (thankfully). Also, while a child whose parent committed suicide is far more likely to commit suicide him/herself, I think the author gave undue attention to this “legacy” and almost none to the physical and sexual abuse she suffered and how that might have contributed to her depression. At least, in the end, there seems to be redemption. And she is damn lucky she found that particular therapist. Overall, I wouldn’t know whether or not to recommend this to someone. Proceed with caution I suppose.

You DO need to read this book, Tracy. I loved it. Really loved it. Gave it four stars because it's hard for me to read stuff that is in that style of story telling, but that's all me. That barren star is a representative of me... not the dear ole folks of Winesburg, Ohio. (I've a feeling I could change my mind about this next time I read it.) And it's short stories! Holy hell! We should read one a week... starting this week (I need to find another copy) and -no wait!!- we need to read these aloud. This week I'm coming over, or you are coming over (you are all invited!) and we are going to read one story from Winesburg, Ohio. Then, next week we will do the same. What a lovely summer tradition!

Interesting historical fiction. Fast reading compilation of fact and fiction.

I recommend Fowles' novel "The Magus," which is far better than this one. "The Collector" suffers from too much navel-gazing and a dearth of philosophical prowess, the inverse of which qualities describe completely the majesty of "The Magus."
