Interesting insights into leadership of US and War of 1812. A cynic will resonate with the self-serving actions of both politicians and military. Facts are real; Andrew Jackson's personal angst and growth are intriguing, though (obviously, duh!)fictionalized.
pretty much like his others.

Although this is mostly fiction, based on a few pages of scripture, this gives a good idea and SOME truthful insight into what it was like in biblical times to be a wife and mother in biblical times. There was just one part I disliked... to do with household gods!! But other than that an enjoyable and interesting read!

An astonishingly good book that covers many of the same themes as his last book, The Corrections. As with that book, there is something to hate about all four of the main protagonists, and yet one feels some sort of connection with each one as well, although a reader might gravitate more towards one character than another (I did with walter.) Depression, dissatisfaction with career choices, success and failures in working in and manipulating the systems of society, and many different facets of love - parental, romantic, platonic. Although the ending is uncharacteristically saccharine for Franzen, it bookends the novel well. I'm a terrible writer, but that should stop you from reading a really good one.
I really liked this one...I probably would give it another half a star. The first book in another YA series. The main character is a tough, hard-nosed, stubborn girl who leads a hodge-podge group of misfits to rescue her brother who has been kidnapped by a crazy king who believes he is a reincarnation of Louis XIV Unlike other YA books, the setting is a form of the earth, just overworked and barren. I will continue reading this series.

This book was not what I was expecting and yet the first half of the book was **very** synchronistic to where my mind was at when I picked it up. About the world transition we are all in right now, according to North & South American Native prophesy (2012). It was also fascinating because I was beginning to learn about the same subject via the Apache Native prophesies - I got to compare and contrast. The second half of the book was more about Ruiz's teachings and "how-to" info. I gave this book only 3 stars because it began getting tedious for me. I felt like it required going further in-depth with his teachings then I was really planning on at the time - I wasn't ready to learn a whole new paradigm. Had I been a student or follower of his, this probably would have been a great read.

I discovered, when I'd read most of this, that it'll be one of 3!! the others aren't published yet. I hate that -_-. I also dislike books were there's a love triangle and a couple spends the first book getting together then they're wrenched apart and the rest of the series is them being kept apart because if stupid stuff. But it was actually quite good in this one (having said that I havent read the second one yet. I'm contemplating waiting till the 3rd is out, in case the second one is actually as good as the first.) In reality The Society is really a rather horrific thing. Everything is picked for you. Your food, your love, your job, your life, the age you die. But there are always those who are undefineable, those whom statistics cannot predict. But is that any scarier than finding out every little rebellion you've considered was predicted?!

A fascinating and disturbing look at what happened after deinstitutionalization (which was, basically, when states closed their mental hospitals, which were notorious for horrendous neglect and worse, rather than investing in proper care and oversight) without a social safety net in place. The result was a gaping hole in the mental health system, which is being filled by prisons and jails ill equipped to deal with mentally ill people. This is not an uplifting book, but a must-read for anyone interested in mental illness, prisoner rights, and this country’s broken mental health system.
