This book tries to explain why Western societies in general rose to such dominance in the world, as opposed to say, Aboriginal Australians. When I was younger, my dad told me, "people in more Northern latitudes had to struggle to survive, so that's why those countries industrialized sooner, while people in tropical climates could just lounge around and pick bananas off of trees." I guess that idea is not uncommon, because this book actually addressed it at one point. Basically, the book tries to explain differences in rates of technological advances, political complexity, and immunity to communicable diseases between societies based on geographical factors of the location where the society originated. Like the local plants and animals that were available for domestication, and the ease or difficulty for people to interact with neighboring societies because of mountains, deserts, or seas. And then how those differences usually led to one society pretty much completely decimating or swallowing up the other when they met. Along the way you also learn some interesting history and linguistics. I think if you like watching the History Channel you'll enjoy this book. Warning though, it gets pretty long, and a bit repetitive.

While I've been reading In Cold Blood, I've been reminiscing about all of the lovely spine-chillin' moider books I've read before. I got a signed copy of this for 3 dollars when I was on holidays. It may have been more of a 4-star book. I gave it 3 to be safe. The coldness of this account of his mother's murder is really striking. Also, the revelation that detectives often fall in love with the victims whose deaths they're investigating - particularly worrying when you think that they've seen the bloodied corpse shots. This is all ground that was covered in an amazing Arena documentary that was Txd a good few years ago.

I have only read Julia Alvarez's adult fiction before and I was glad (though not surprised) to see that she translates quite well to older kids and young adult literature. The story is of a young girl and her family living in the times of the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. The reader has a very intimate positioning alongside the main character's life. The moods are sometimes incongruent with what is happening politically, but this is quite typical of a child's perception of things. A quick read with a little something for every reader.

The author provides a wealth of specific suggestions on how to impress your guests of all ages. No details are left out. I would recommend it!

I don't recommend this book at all. It has a clever title, but is basically whiny and unsubtle. The language is very dated and in a few years it will be archaic.

Greenfield's Surgery: Scientific Principles and Practice (6th edition) Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

Marking this book as "read" is a lie, as I got about 90 pages in and decided I didn't want to finish it. It's about a family living in modern-day England? America? (one of those) who are actually all vampires. The parents decided to abstain from human blood about 17 years earlier and they have never told their 2 children what they really are. The 2 children, Rowan and Clara, are regarded as freaks at school, as they are sickly (because they don't drink human blood), and sensitive to light and garlic. In an attempt to get healthy, Clara decides to try an all-vegan diet, which works on humans but not so well for vampires. She ends up killing a classmate at a party and realizing she has a taste for blood, and more than that, all of her ailments vanish once she's tasted blood. This happens within the first 80 pages or so, so I presume the rest of the book is the family dealing with this crisis, including calling in the dad's brother who is still a practicing vampire (and has a past relationship with the mother). Now why I didn't finish it: I thought it was going to be a humorous take on vampires and modern culture, but it was more cynical and depressing than cynical and funny. At least the first 90 pages were. Perhaps it ended more hopefully or with the characters growing and developing, but I didn't want to slog through all the cynicism to get there.
