This is a definite page turner and makes the reader beg for more. Will there be a sequel? Excellent job and excellent writing!

An abstract portrayal of the heresy trial and execution of Jeanne d'Arc with many flashbacks to the events leading up to her rise to fame in France. This book provided no background about the characters, and having no previous knowledge of the details of her demise, I'm sure I missed the significance of many statements. The arguments, however, were interesting and though I was too lazy to research the people involved, I feel the read was worth my effort. I learned of this play through a birthday tribute to the Anouilh on Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac.

I believe he thinks like all dogs think--in the hear and now, obsessed with food, loyal to a fault. That said, I thought the plot in this third book was a bit thin and, well, far-fetched (disappearance of a circus elephant . . .), but I still lap up whatever Chet is serving.

(English - Arabic review) I admit, it took me a long time to finish this novel, I'm not sure if I do agree with the topic but all what I know is that my religious believes disagree with such an issue. I know that people are responsible of their actions and behaviours.. They can choose the type of life they want to live as they are willing to face the consequences and that what exactly happened to Zoe and Vanessa.. However, I disliked Max, his brother and Liddy, they just don't make sense to me and their actions and reactions were really annoying. What I do like in this novel is that there is an explanation for every issue and it also showed the opinion of both sides. what I disliked is that many situations appeared in the last pages, while many details where explained in 466 pages which I do believe they are not important as the ones in the last pages. Finally, the end of the story didn't convince me at all. تدور أحداث هذه الرواية حول امرأة عاشت في ظل زوجها لمدة تسع سنوات وحاولت الإنجاب بشكل مستميت في هذه الفترة، وللضرر الذي سببته هي لنفسها من عيادة إلى أخرى واستنفاذ طرق الحمل المتعددة، وعند حملها الأخير بطفل وولادته قبل الموعد ميتاً وحزن الفقد الشديد يقرر زوجها تطليقها حيث أنه وجد دوره في حياة زوجته كدور المخصّب فحسب. تدخل زوجته في حالة كئآبة مطلقة وينخرط هو في الشرب فيتسبب بحادث يغير مجرى حياته فيذهب للعيش مع أخيه وزوجته المتدينين المحافظين على الذهاب إلى الكنيسة ويصبح متديناً بعد أن كان لا يهتم فعلاً إلى ما يعنيه الدين. في المقابل تقع زوجته السابقة التي تعمل في مجال العلاج بالموسيقى في الحب مجدداً، ولكن في غرام امرأة، تطورت علاقتهما بما فيه الكفاية للتفكير الجدي في الانتقال للعيش معها، إلى الزواج واقعاً. تبدأ فكرة الإنجاب تطارد المرأة من جديد، وكونها وصلت إلى سن الأربعين مع نمط حياتها الجديد يجعل موضوع حملها صعباً جداً، إضافة إلى اجهاضاتها المتكررة ومواجهتها لمرض السرطان - عافانا الله وإياكم - مما يجعلها تفكر في حل معقول جداً هو أن تستخدم البويضات التي تم تلقيحها في الجلسات العلاجية السابقة مع زوجها حيث تعتبر جزءاً منها بيولوجياً. على كلٍ يرفض زوجها ذلك ويعرض البويضات على أخيه وزوجته اللذان لم يسبق لهما الإنجاب أيضاً.. مما يعقد الأمر وينقله إلى المحكمة. الرواية مشوقة ولكنها غير مقنعة بالنسبة لي.. ونهايتها بدت لي محاولة مستميته لإرضاء جميع الأطراف.

Quite impressive. Most impressive to me is that Eugenides is not (to my knowledge) a hermaphrodite and yet the narrative seemed so much like a relation of real-life experience. Cal's authenticity under these circumstances reminds me of Dolores in "She's Come Undone" (Wally Lamb).

This is one of my favorite books of all time. It's the classic bildungsroman--a young girl is sent to live with her snotty rich family who treats her poorly, then said family sends her to boarding school where disease and strict rules are rampant, girl grows up and makes her own way as a governess for a ward of a man who's never home, man comes home and takes a cool interest in the girl who likes him back but does not see the possibility of romance with their different classes, strange noises are heard from the attic, and . . . Well, maybe not classic, but it is a coming-of-age tale of sorts with a lot of darker elements, a very romantic book with many elements of the supernatural and gothic, as well as spiritual. Young readers, especially girls, can easily relate to the plain and discerning Jane who sticks up for herself and those she loves no matter what. You see her mature from a girl to a woman, and feel what she feels. No film version of this novel comes close to comparison with this book. Jane is role model of the likes not seen in literature very often today.

I read this book for a college class (one of the few I made it the whole way through) and I remember being shocked at liking it. The book is so far outside of my usual genre base that I assumed I could only dislike it. Not so. I found the tale of climbing Everest (and the ensuing disaster) to be absolutely riveting and Krakauer's way of relating it easy to follow, even for the uninitiated among mountain climbers. It got me thinking about doing something as astounding as climbing Mt. Everest... for about 2 seconds... and then I regained my sanity.
