Oh my. Read it as soon as you can. You won't notice the 600 pages. Amazing. Loved it - one of my top five favorite books!

Whoa! I read this book in one day. I finished reading the first in the Hunger Games trilogy and had to read more. Once I opened the book, it never closed. My husband spoke to me and I did not answer, I was too engaged with the Hunger Games. I only take a break now between books to write this and to calm my emotion at it's conclusion. Then, I must move on to the third book, Mockingjay. I believe this is high praise, indeed. Of course, the novel deserves more of a review. Suzanne Collins has created a wonderfully suspenseful story that truly provokes the reader's emotion. In the second novel of the trilogy, we learn along with Katniss Everdeen, our protagonist and unwilling hero, that one cannot simply win and go back to life unchanged. Indeed, her daring to be human to think of another rather than her own life alone in the Hunger Games, has incited hope and rebellion. I find this the tying theme of the book. One is not alone and one cannot achieve alone. We are all part of community and will thrive, or at least survive, as community in a manner preferable to alone. A favorite aspect of this novel is the way people spark ideas off one another to develop new ideas to profit the betterment of all. I like the underlying considerations of trust, taking risks to form relationships that, although difficult, ultimately profit those involved. Acceptance of those so utterly different leads to strength and to life itself in this novel. I congratulate Suzanne Collins for her expertise in writing a novel appropriate to the young adult, yet so appealing to adults; a novel that can be taken on many levels and provide great pleasure if one chooses to read on a surface level or with an in depth search for greater meaning.

Shame on you Joanne Harris for endorsing this. Waste of paper.

Lorna Landvik is a story teller! This is a story of two wacky Minnesota sisters who live in Minneapolis which is portrayed as a female Lake Wobegon with many of life's trials.
Really enjoyed the developed main characters in the book ... I'd rate this higher but at some points all the detail became too tedious. Maybe it's because I spend all day reading for my job, but it felt like I skimmed over some details of fantastical landscapes because my brain was just too tired to put together all those words into a pretty picture. I loved the main characters' storyline; however, the ending was sort of anti-climatic. I don't know what I expected exactly, but it lacked punch for me after all the buildup. The switch by chapter to the future or the past, all leading to one point and adding to the buildup, was confusing when the dates got closer together. I found myself going back to the previous chapter to remind myself what the date was for that part. Overall, I really loved this book's first half. And I bet this would make a great movie, if they don't make it cheesy.
Definitely a fun read, especially if you read up on Carroll(Dodgson)'s character and speculations on mental conditions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Ca...

I read this back in college and periodically pick it up and reread again. I think the short vinettes of the residents of Winesburg provide the reader with a perfect snaphot of who may be lurking beneath your own neighbor.

Savannah Reid, the buxom, bodacious, Georgia transplant, is a private detective in California. This time, she's assisting her former cop partner to apprehend the Santa rapist, a vicious and brutal serial rapist with a Santa costume who leaves his victims beaten and raped in an orange grove. She is also teaching self-defense at the local public library. One of her students is kidnapped by the rapist and who escapes in a daring move. She provides Savannah with a clue that helps unravel the complicated case. I like Savannah Reid a lot, with her raggedy-weird family and cluster of interesting friends. This book started out superbly with some edge-of-the-seat-nail-gnawing suspense and loses steam as a number of subplots interfere. It all gets woven together with a very satisfying ending. The ride could have been a little better.

Far too violent for my taste.
