This book was hard to choke down the first time through, but when you reread it, you discover all the subtleties and sublime sweetness in each character. It's most definitely worth a couple of ganders!

One of the better dystopians I've read.

Not great. Simple story about a woman, unhappily living in Japan, who heads back to her home on the east coast after her mother has a slight accident. She uncovers some mysteries, reunites with a past love, discovers information about her fathers death etc. It did get me somewhat interested in the suffragate era. I'd like to learn more about that period and the heroines who helped women's rights.

I loved this book! Which was probably related to the fact that I was living in England at the time, and constantly visiting London, where the novel was set. It involves characters that are intertwined through generations and experiences, and culminates in a terrific ending. I think my favorite part of the story is how Smith nails the experiences of ethnic minorities in London, a topic almost never talked about. Also, her writing style is beautiful.

Not two days after reading about Piper methysticum (Kava) in this book, someone had recommended taking it for anxiety. I'll just copy this bit from his bio, because it sums this book up nicely: "He reads and distills the literature of pharmacology and neuroscience, of ethnobotany and anthropology, of mythology and political economics as they intersect with the direct experience of human psychoactive use."

This is a remarkable book. Painfully honest, and meticulously written, this series of essays skewers many of the post-modern truths that we are subjected to regularly. Although the book can seem redundant or repetitive(it is a collection of his previously published articles) points he makes are remarkable. A must read for anyone curious about racial politics in America.
Interesting story especially with all the reality T.V. that is on now. The whole idea of watching children killing each other was repulsive and horrific. It really made me think about what I watch for entertainment and if I am condoning what I watch just by watching it. That said, the story kept me reading and I was very interested in the author's note on the back flap that explained she is exploring the effects of war and violence on those coming of age.

So glad I discovered this series of books. Like the character, Eve Dallas, the murder mysteries, and the futuristic twist in the stories.

This is such an amazing book! For those who haven't read the DaVinci Code, but would like to, I recommend reading this one first.
