The heroes of the first book “The Travellers” are back for new adventures against the Brethen/Tabula - the organization that wants to control the world. Both factions go through 509 pages of various ups and downs. Sadly, once the very first scene is gone, it takes about 200 pages to read some real action and reach a faster pace. Before that, the story plods along between America, England and Germany. On the plus side, the splicers (a cross between a baboon and a dog), the Harlequin culture (as irritating as it is) and astral travels make their customary return. They are after all the trilogy’s trademark. They also differentiate these books from the “Da Vinci Code” to which the Fourth Realm is often seems to be compared. to But then these days any novel that ventures into ‘secret’ symbols of history receives a “New DVC” label on its cover ;-). The Dark River is not a bad read, but you have to be pretty addicted to its characters to follow them through this new books, knowing full well that you’ll be left with a cliff-hanger until the next instalment is published. In the same vein, I preferred “The Straw Men” by Michael Marshall Smith

Fortuna spins the wheel..
This was the first novel that Austen wrote. It was the last one published. It is often overlooked when one is looking at Austen's works, but in my opinion, I think it rivals Pride and Prejudice in many ways. The entire tale is the authoress making side comments as her characters play their scenes. Northanger Abbey is a beautiful satire (which Austen was so good at) but this time instead of doing the poking merely at such trivial things as marriage and position, she tossed in the gothic romance element. Without giving away the ending, I think I can safely state that her position on the reading of novels is clear: enjoy them but beware believing too much the fiction. It is also a great way to find some classic - and I do mean CLASSIC- gothic novels.

I've read one of Guy de Maupassant's stories a few years ago, The Horla, for a class called The Sublime, the Fantastic, the Uncanny.

I won this from a goodreads giveaway. Enjoyed the book. I am an avid dog person, especially labradors...they are my breed. Also loved the size of the book. And thank you to the author and his wife for adopting!

I have to be honest and say that it took me a while to finish this book as I am not a big fan of scary stories. The story was very well written and it had me in suspense the whole time. The author does a phenomenal job describing the surroundings which helped me get a better picture of the hotel and the characters. There were some parts that were pretty scary and a little freaky for me, but a very good story over all. The characters were well developed, although I didn't fall in love with any of them. I guess it’s just that kind of story. The White Horse Inn is known for its ghost sightings and things that go bump in the night. Digger and his paranormal crew plan a weekend paranormal ghost hunt to cash in on some money, but Digger also has personal reasons to revisit the Inn. Kendra, Digger’s teenage daughter is all into drawing characters in her drawing pad and avoiding her father. Kendra holds grudges against her father because she has been the parent in the family ever since her mother died when she was a little girl. There are several parts in the book that are pretty scary so I suggest reading this book with a light on at night, but then again, I’m a wimp when it comes to scary books and movies. The ending left me wanting more. I know the author wanting us to use our imaginations, but I feel like, if I read a book, I want to be told what happens and not left up to me to figure it out. Other than that I thought the book was pretty good. If you are into scary books and movies, then I suggest you read this book. http://www.onceuponatwilight.com/2011...

** spoiler alert ** A fitting end to the 4-part "Apocalypse" arc as our black-ops group of heroes are pushed into a moral dilemma about executing Kid Apocalypse. Rick Remender proves how great a writer he is by bombarding us with a sharp storyline w/ meaningful and funny dialogue from it's 'not-your-generic-superheroes' characters. Let's not forget the visuals: Jerome Opena's art is eye-popping and gorgeous. My only qualms about the arc are how Fantomex's powers of misdirection border on absurd and seem to serve as an easy escape for the team. Add an external nervous system which floats around, talks to him telepathically and morphs into anything he wants. Might as well use Fantomex to misdirect all their opponents so that Wolvie, Psylocke, Deadpool & Archangel can just relax on the sidelines. My other qualm is the dialogue between the heroes is witty, sharp and never goes over the top while the dialogue of the villains borders on dumb, absurd (based on how they react to their defeats), and predictable. Qualms aside, this is a great comic book. Rick Remender, Jerome Opena & Dean White (colors) comprise the Miami Heat of Comic-Book Dome.
