First off, a great big THANK YOU to Ms. Neville for sending such a delightful package! And I eagerly awaiting her next so the teaser bookmark was the best! I'm going with a strong four for the first half of this book and a very tepid three for the last half. And let me just say that this is solely due to my beliefs about marriage and relationships, not necessarily a review of the author's writings. The first half starts off strong with a very sigh worthy hero in the Demon Marquess, Max St. Albans. He is absolutely unfit for polite society since he has operated outside of it for so long, and that makes him even better to me! The heroine is a generous yet selfish and immature creature, but she is still young and very babied by her father. Due to the death of her mother (definitely not a spoiler), she has an insatiable need to control everything and an extreme fear of things changing. As much as that got on my nerves, I understood it. I think anyone who ever believes they have everything under control is just tempting God to say "oh yeah?" Anyway, their courtship, if you can call it that, was great fun. Lots of fighting and making up **sigh**. I loved how he stalked her, probably sick I know, but there you have it. The coming together scene was really syrupy and slightly over the top for my tastes, but sweet nonetheless. I was surprised to see the marriage take place, and still have 100 pages left to read. What is left? Well, here's where I flounder a bit in my enjoyment of this story. Obviously, the author has to have a way for the heroine to find out about his clandestine activities with The Order so in proceeds a ridiculous attempt on the writer's behalf to put doubts and mistrust in the heroine's head without any reason. Seriously, the first chapter after their marriage is all about how perfect her life is, she never thought she could be his happy, blah blah blah. Then in the next chapter when the inevitable fight needs to happen, suddenly the heroine is thinking about that wall she keeps encountering and how she fears for the longevity of their marriage, but she keeps hoping he'll come clean...Really? When did she feel that? So you have the "I caught you" moment followed by ridiculous rants by the heroine about how she knew all along she couldn't trust him and how can he love her if he isn't spilling his every thought to her. And here is where my personal beliefs start coloring my view. I am a firm hater of the heroine who has to know everything...EVERYTHING...about the hero. I have been married for almost 15 years, and I like that my husband and I don't feel the need to share every little thing that pops into our heads. I feel extreme dislike for the woman who is so insecure that she has to know every detail about his life before her, where he was at 10:34 when she called and he didn't answer, what all of his friends are saying, etc. That implies distrust on her part, not his. And this is exactly what happened to Daphne. Then you have the makeup scene which was, again, very syrupy but nice. So overall, not a badly written book; it just had some things that went against my personal beliefs. Several cliched lines and lots of syrupy sweetness, but not a bad intro to a great series. I'm very much looking forward to Rohan's book. And I loved getting more insight into Drake's mind. I do believe his will be the best book of all.
