Very interesting look at the inception of comic books and their hey day with interesting insane and unpredictable characters. I liked the period feel and the energy of the book.

Luxurious to read such good writing, and study of the time.
At first you can really tell it's not Tolkien himself writing this. The first chapter is almost nothing but descriptive, but once you push on, you see the Tolkien style come through and I was left wishing there were hundreds of more pages to continue the story. The only really bad thing about this book, is just that, it's to short.
It was a great book, but sad at the end....

The recipes in this book reminded me a lot of my parent's kitchen table as a kid. Simple, pared down meals, emphasizing fresh and in-season vegetables. I recommend this book to those who grew up eating heavily prepared and processed foods. I also strongly recommend it to vegetarians since I don't think there were any fish or meat-based recipes. There are no photographs and it is more a book on food/eating philosophy, rather than straight-up recipes. I did like the emphasis on an "un-plugged" kitchen, i.e. no microwave, food processor, etc; food tastes better with some elbow grease!

The scene of the horse beating was very shocking to me. Brought me to tears. A pretty powerful book, and as hard as it was to straighten out the 'ski' names, it left me feeling a lot brighter than I thought it would.

The writer, who wrote under a pseudonym, just died yesterday & only when I read her obituary in the Oregonian did I realize that she is a woman I worked with, knew & corresponded with for some years. I just ordered her book today. I just finished this funny high school boy story about decisions both good and bad. I really enjoyed it, but found some of the latter part of the book a little farfetched--too many problems in too little space. That said, the author nails the voice--refreshing, candid and full of wit which would appeal to sophomores of all stripes. For me, much of the joy in reading this book was in hearing an old friend's voice and humor brought forth in a published, awarded book. She was so justifiably proud.

Andreas Merrick is the king of London's dark underworld, having amassed unimaginable wealth and power...and a fierce reputation that leaves even the bravest men quaking in their boots. Yet one person is maddeningly unintimidated by his fearsome presence: the persistent Miss Phoebe Pace. Equal parts honey and steel, Phoebe will stop at nothing to find her missing brother and save her family. Though associating with Andreas means peril and scandal, she never expects to experience a passion so intense that it threatens to consume her. But enigmatic Andreas is no ordinary man to love. He brings dangers from all sides -- without and within -- while tempting her beyond her wildest dreams... I love Andreas! He's such a great hero: tortured, aloof, curt, intimidating man, and yet he's scared to death of Phoebe - a woman that represents happiness, sunshine, everything good. His childhood was horrific, and it influenced him deeply. (view spoiler) Now that his brother Roman is happily married, he feels the loneliness even more. But above all things his belief that he is a bad man is the thing that draws most attention. He simply won't let himself believe that he is redeemable. Luckily for him Phoebe doesn't give up. Phoebe is a marvelous heroine who totally deserves Andreas. She's a good person whose life has been spiraling out of control lately. And yet she still doesn't give in. And she's incredibly stubborn. I like the way she didn't take no for an answer, she simply did everything she could to make Andreas notice her and fall for her. I like the whole theme of a criminal mastermind falling for a lady. Seeing how this is pure fiction, stuff like that can happen, in RL of course nothing would be as easy. But in here it worked. We get to see more of Roman - I liked him in his book One Night Is Never Enough. What I find interesting is the relationship between Roman and Andreas. They're complete opposites, but they still get along splendidly and call themselves brothers. Some of the quotes I liked are included below. Rating: 5 stars
