Anne Isaacs, author of Swamp Angel, has created another fanciful tall tale about another great heroine, Estrella Rivera, who runs so fast that she burns the air around her, leaving behind a glowing trail of flame. In this tale set during the California gold rush, Estrella must rescue her three pets from the ghosts of Luckless Gulch. Her dog, Comet, is a Rubberado puppy who can bounce so high he fairly flies and eats rocks. Her two other pets are a Sidehill Wowser who looks like a short furry horse whose downhill legs are twice as long as its uphill legs, and a Kickle Snifter who is small as a lamb but strong as an elephant. Estrella scares the ghosts underground where the tunnels they dig cause the California mountains to rise up and the Whitewood trees to rise so close to the sun that they get sunburned and are now the Redwoods. In fact you can still feel earthquakes in California wherever those ghosts are digging. The charming illustrations include hilarious details that children will love to discover. Perfect for units on tall tales, this story would also be a great way to introduce the history of the California gold rush.

al-hamdu lillah for this book, it allowed me to take a "real" and deep look at life and to put tawhid (the oneness of God) at a higher level of understanding. May Allah reward this author with the highest level of Jannah for the service he did for those who read his book, barak Allahu fi. amin

This "detective" novel strips away the expected characteristics of the genre, leaving us with loss and Erlendur's incurable desire to be a Speaker for the Dead. There is mystery but it's all off the records with no sense of achieving some sort of justice. Instead it is the most private journey we get into the soul of Erlendur who still aches for the loss of his brother experienced as a young child.

Finally, again a very good book after I'd read a handful of bad ones. Interesting characters, good murder plot, a few twists and turns I didn't expect and a killer I didn't suspect until almost at the very end. - Very good!

I kept thinking I would be disappointed with the ending - but I wasn't.

Interesting and certainly insightful about modern American life, but academic and dense at times.

I've never read a book where "she came her brains out" was in a sentence. That kind of sums up the experience in a way. The premise of thestory was cute, but the execution seemed rushed.
