Another book club selection. Bird had me laughing out loud through the entire book. It reminded me of a 1930s screwball comedy with Carole Lombard. The only problem I had with it was that it was set in the recent past so it was hard to remember some things (mostly technologically based) weren't possible way back in 2003 that would be now so that, from time to time, I caught myself perplexed as to why something happened just so. But that certainly wasn't enough to keep it off of my "Best of 2008" list.

I am going to start out by saying that I enjoyed this book. However, when comparing it to the rest of the books I read in this series... I don't know... it just didn't pull me in the way the previous books did. I am not sure if it was the storylines or perhaps the fact that this book, out of all of them, seemed to drag a little bit. I know I am being a bit vague, but I don't want to give any spoilers away. Also, there is a BIG, HUGE CLIFFHANGER at the end of the book. Frankly, I am not a big fan of cliffhangers and I think that also turned me off a bit. I know why authors and publishers do this.... so you'll buy the next book of course, but if I had read these as they came out... I would be ROYALLY annoyed! Luckily, my impatient self does not have to wait ;o). In this book Rose graduates from the Academy, is still wondering about Dimitri (who is basically stalking her), trying to find a way to make him not a Strigoi anymore, and now she has to deal with struggling to find out what her place will be beyond graduation. We also have more of the other side stories like Lissa and Christian, Rose and Adrian, Abe and Rose and once again we meet some new characters. Poor Rose is always put in such precarious positions. The whole book is full of those. Rose is always so anxious to 'put things right' that she goes to the extremes to do that. Another thing that I won't say turned me off, but frustrated me something awful, was the whole Rose and Dimitri storyline...espcially later on in the story. I just hope Dimitri finally does realize all that Rose did for him. Oh, and there was a more political undertone to this book than the previous ones. I didn't mind that, but I noticed in other reviews, that it annoyed some people. I believe that Mead needed to put all the politics in this book because I THINK that will be the premise for the next book (or at least be a BIG part of it). Overall, I did like this book. I would give it a 3 3/4 star to a 4 star rating. I am now off to start reading the last part of this series. Keeping my fingers crossed that many questions will be answered.

This book was VERY well-done. I just wish we could have it read out loud to prospective parents persuaded by the credentials of Playboy bunnies who frighten them away from vaccines. This book clearly lays out where the scaremongers are wrong, WHY they are wrong, and why it matters to all of us. This has been an issue becoming increasingly worrying to me recently, since every year, as more and more parents refuse to vaccinate, the yearly pertussis outbreaks in my area get worse and worse. And my asthmatic son may some day pay the price for someone else's parenting choice. Scary. The science is clear, the issue is black and white, and it's high time someone like Dr. Offut had the courage to say so.
I liked this book, mostly because it was a quick and simple read. Cute story. It seems like all of the characters are suffering from unrequited love, hopefully if there is a third book some of those issues could be resolved. Due to Finley trying to merge her two sides, I feel like she's losing her edge. I liked that she was wreckless, didn't take shit from no one. She was a strong role model, in the sense that she stood up for herself, her friends and her beliefs. Sure she still does this, but she is starting to get cautious. And that is kind of boring. The ending kind of irked me as well. They stopped the bad guys, some one died, but they just get back on their aircraft and head home. The end. Technically there wasn't anything wrong with it, I just kind of expected something more I suppose. I am expecting to read more from this author. So far I find the stories easy and relaxing to read.

It is somewhat redundant to add to the excellent reviews already posted on this book, but I highly reccomend it for everyone, everyone, everyone. If you read it sincerely and openly, it will widen and deepen your chest, it will induce humility and ecstasy, a slow, careful measure of the pleasure and nature and moments of every breath...you will be in a state - that state we look for, the state we miss when we reflect on spiritual highs we've had in the past, or sought in the past, or observed in others and desired so much. If you're looking for light, or feel desperate - if you need solace or grounding, read just one prayer in this book. It can't help but help. Even if you're happy...couch it in the reality of this: appreciation, seeking the mercy of the All-Merciful. Rumi has a poem (that I can't begin to quote, please forgive me) in which he writes of the heart opening like a flower. I can't help but tie that image to this book. That is what happens when I read these prayers...it's involtunary, like a good mood in springtime.

To say that Cloud Atlas is an astonishing achievement might make it seem unapproachable--too rarefied to be a good read. Far from it, because Cloud Atlas is part historical fiction, part pulp mystery, part science fiction, and much more, each in their own separate sections of the book. The structure is unique, with seemingly unrelated stories building like the levels of a pyramid into a pinnacle that connects them all. David Mitchell is capable of exquisite prose, but in Cloud Atlas he takes it further, actually using a good half-dozen different styles and voices to service his multiple plots. And each of the individual books that make up this rich whole is compulsively readable. Cloud Atlas was the first book I read by Mitchell (though his third published novel) and I've since read the rest of his body of work. All of his novels are of lasting literary value, and all are thoroughly enjoyable from cover to cover. Maybe that's Mitchell's greatest gift. Bravo!

I like this series. They're kind of like a lighter Law & Order: SVU set in the late 1800's.

I'm such a Shannon Hale fan. I loved this whole series. This maybe isn't my favorite in the series but for sure worth reading and even 5 stars to me.

In the last couple of months, I read 1/2 of The Artist's Way, The Creative Habit by Twarp and this slim little volume which was my favorite out of all them by far. I think the first half was much more interesting to me than the second, but still it's a book I imagine I'll be rereading again as I confront the anxiety that writing inevitably brings for me. "Why do it, then?" Well, it also brings me joy.

Not sure what there is to say--if you haven't read him, you should. This book doesn't entirely avoid the pitfalls of short story collections--an author has a tone of voice, thematic preoccupations, etc., and this can become repetitious when reading several short stories by the same author--but with writing this poetic, and often poignant, what's wrong with that?
