Read this for school and ended up liking it quite a bit. Written in the 50's, it was Okada's only book because he died of a heart attack at 48. A very interesting subject which isn't talked about nearly enough. It deals with the treatment of Japanese and Japanese Americans by our government in WWII. His sentence structure is occasionally very awkward, but other than that, it's good.

Kind of a throwaway for Carroll, but a decent entertainment.
This was a fast-read and a fairly good book. It's a diary written by a woman during her first year of teaching in inner-city Chicago. Certainly much different than teaching in Idaho! Some of the things the kids were doing at her school were amazing..... shocking, even! At any rate, it was a good book.

Following this book through forward and backward makes this an engaging book. Underneath it all this is a romantic tragedy novel which is well written.

After reading this book will the world be a better place? For me I am sure that I am now stuck with this garbage of a book, that really need to bring out the best in a person if we share how to be a good garbage collector, only then we can be a better person. Let do it and come back here again to share more view.

This is not a book about football, although the enforced creation of a football team at Unseen University is central to the plot. It is more about the nature of and differences between fame and celebrity. It is about fashion at all levels and its transience. Most importantly it is about stereotypes, racial and social. This book was not terribly well received by the Discworld fraternity and is the subject of much earnest discussion at conventions (we are a sad bunch) but I think it is one of his best. It is not hugely funny, but is massively thought provoking with central characters who are a beautiful pastiche of Posh and Becks. I would love it to be a prequel to more, but TP hsa his hands full at the moment.

I liked Ms Edghill's tidbits of background which gave me more understanding of how things worked 200 years. She even had some detailed explainations about why spending $$ for a London season was preferable and mandatory to selling off stables of horses, and cutting back on living expenses. I didn't care for all the money arguments. The man reasoned that he needed to spend $$$$$$ on his sister's season, while the commoner wife berated him. She, however, spent just as much on fixing up the old ruin of a castle which none of the family wanted. When I read this book, I kept thinking maybe I had read it before, some years ago. But then I'd read more and know that was not what I remembered...especially when reading about the arguments about money. Quite by coincidence, I picked up a copy of Georgette Heyer's "A Civil Contract" and started re-reading it. To my surprise, I'm discovered I was reading the same story as "The Ill-bred Bride". Yep, I know that there are only so many different plots available to writers, but the beginning chapters of these books are very similar, even to the characters' personalities (the sensitive Lord of the manor, the selfish mother, an already formed attachment, a caring female friend/sister). Guess there is a formula that books have to follow to be published.
