Pretty fantastic stuff; at first I was a bit put-off by Yokoyama's tendency to obscure the object of his drawing so much that it becomes abstracted, but once you get accustomed to the flow and context items become more easily identifiable and fascinating. However, I have to admit that the reason I liked this so much was due to Yokoyama's architecture & his comments at the end of the book-- looking at those two things I'm reminded of John Hejduk to a degree, which is fantastic for any fan of Hejduk.

DNF for now. Reasons coming later. Hope to pick up again soon.
Good stuff, but tricky to put down and pick up. If I had a solid chunk of time to luxuriate in this, I am sure it would be 4 stars. Great information interspersed with engaging stories connected to clouds. I am still plowing along with great satisfaction. --Caroline

** spoiler alert ** This was sort of a clunker for me. It seemed a little longer than needed. Plus, it didn't answer some questions I had. For example, if Jack didn't leave the sperm on the victim's leg, than who did? Why would he consider going back to NY to see his mother when she had so clearly disowned him after his first conviction? I dunno...not Jodi Picoult's finest work in my opinion. =(
Excellent sea adventure about a young man entering into the life his father shared. A great first book to a very interesting story. Richard Bolitho shows what it feels like to be a member of the British Navy. He shares his fears, wonders and anxiety about what it takes to be an officer.

It left me feeling slightly melancholy..but it's very well written so I was okay with the leftover feeling.

I read this book in 5th or 6th grade. It's one of those books that sticks with you even when you are older. I loved the movie, but the book of course was so much better. It's a must own

The White Lioness is book number three in Mankell's series of crime novels Ystad detective featuring Kurt Wallander. I was really iffy on whether or not I would read this one, since it seemed more like a span-the-globe type of mystery, but I stuck with it and was happily rewarded. The action begins when an estate agent goes out to look at a house for sale and loses her way on the road. Stopping to ask for directions at a farmhouse was the last thing she ever did. Called in to investigate her disappearance (and ultimately her death), Wallander and his team had no idea that their search for a killer would take them across the world to South Africa (the year is 1992), where a small cabal was planning a major assassination which its members hoped would set events in motion to stop the plans for disassembling the policy of apartheid in that country. This is one of those novels where you know who the killer is pretty much right away, and you're just watching to see how Wallander and his team figure it out. Well written, The White Lioness takes place in two separate settings, but the story is very neatly tied together. The characters are realistically drawn -- especially the character of Konovalenko, who makes for an excellent bad guy. I liked this one much better than the previous series entry (Dogs of Riga). I'd definitely recommend this one to fans of Mankell, to those who like Scandinavian mysteries (which, in my mind, are simply excellent), and to those readers who want a mystery novel that is engrossing. Fans of police procedurals will enjoy this book and this series.
I just love Isabelle Allende, so anything by her is pretty great. This retelling of Zorro could have been pretty silly, but it's actually a really great novel.

It takes me back to the days when I was bullied. Some people think that a seemingly harmless teasing and joking do not and should not affect a person very much. But like what Hannah Baker said, you don't know everything about a person, your effect on them, and the gravity of the words you tell them. I suppose it's easy for other people, especially those who have not experienced a rumor about them spread, to have a tendency to think Hannah's 13 reasons are not enough, but it's important to consider the phase Hannah's in. She's in high school and a teenager. Identity formation and status are very crucial at this time. I get what she's feeling, I get what she's thinking. But that's not to say I support her suicide act. I'm disappointed that she chose to end her life, but I'm satisfied with how it changed Clay's perspectives in a good way. At least, her death brought out some good. I liked the premise a lot, it's very original.
