The ending was a little disappointing but it was a fun ride. I am having so much fun reading this series. It is not a mind challenging read but it's fun.

A friend gave me this lovely book and it's the kind of book I don't want to finish--so I'm reading it very slowly. It's mostly descriptive, but it does have a background--a six year old girl is spending the summer with her grandmother because her mother has just died. They are on an island in the Gulf of Finland. It's so beautiful I can hardly stand it--little descriptive pieces of little things they do together, with all of life and death in the background. Tove Jansson wrote the Moomintroll books--which I read but years ago, so can barely remember them--fanciful, creative, odd!
So, where do I start on this summary? Well, if you are getting to this book, you've probably already read the first two books and so hooked you don't care what I'm going to say. But I'm going to give it a quick go for you anyway. And if you haven't read the first two books, there WILL BE SPOILERS FOR FIRST TWO BOOKS here. With the end of City of Ashes, we now have a clue from an old friend of Clary's mothers of what we need to do to wake Clary's mom from her self induced coma. Clary is still struggling with Jace being her brother, and wanting more from the relationship and not acting on it. Now we find the Lightwoods, Jace, and Clary are traveling to the home country of the Shadowhunters and the capital city. But as excited as Clary it to go and see the home city, Jace is just as determined to not have Clary go. And Clary nor the others know why. Jace is being very secretive about it again. Will Clary get there? Of course she will, but what will happen when she arrives? And how will she get there? Well, I have to say I had to rush out to get this book as I couldn't wait to read it. I HAD to know what would happen, mostly with Clary and Jace. And the ride Cassandra takes you on with each book is just amazing. This is another wonderfully written book in which I didn't get much sleep until I was done with it. I just couldn't put it down. And not just because I wanted answers. We start right where City of Ashes leaves off and jump head first into the action. These characters never get a rest from the wicked in this book and I loved it! We meet new characters and all the old. And we lose a character or two ;) as we go through this one too. I loved the way the characters stay true to who they are from the beginning, yet some have grown so greatly from the beginning. And until the end of this book, I really didn't realize how much these characters had grown. I am so hooked on this series, I will follow it until Cassandra doesn't write of it anymore. She has really made a true believer and a great fan of her work here. Thank you Cassandra!

It alternated between plain boring and corporate masturbation. I was not a fan but no surprise considering it was written by corporate spin whores who lack any moral compass. Also the patriarchal tone was palpable. I only recommend it if you are trying to be a soul-less corporate pawn.

This book has a very circumscribed focus, but if you are interested in how French and American poetry have been talking to each other the past approximately 150 years, it's a beautiful little monograph which will slake that curiosity and give you many avenues of future research, and point you towards little-known classic lit mags of great collectibility. Reproductions of magazines known for great literature and stellar design abound. The interviews with the translators about process, intent, beliefs, etc. are often quite amusing and their answers are often surprisingly quirky. There is an error here in this listing. It states the book was written and edited by Guy Bennett and John Ashbery. Ashbery is in here, but the book was written and edited by Bennett and Beatrice Mousli.
Clearly focused on historic, nautical authenticity, this would probably be perfect for someone else -- to read. Audio filled with such revolting noises, it was like an old man's mucus-lined tongue forced itself in to caress my cochlea. I couldn't have cared less for the characters or story.

Comments: “An energetic story with brisk action and a personal tale about a family gone awry .. vivid story-telling makes each aspect of EYES WIDE OPEN creepily realistic, including the chilling ending. ” (Miami Herald ) We have a dysfunctional family -- a young man who is bipolar and perhaps a bit schizophrenic that makes him suicidal. His parents are down and out -- his dad is an old stoner who couldn't make it as a success in the music biz. His uncle is a Doctor and is the only one in the family who seems to have escaped the demons of his father, his brother and his nephew. The story begins with the "suicide" of the nephew. When Uncle goes to CA to pay his respects, he's drawn to the idea that perhaps the boy didn't commit suicide after all. There is a very creepy character in the book who eerily resembles Charles Manson and who is somehow able to reach beyond the maximum security walls of his prison to continue his rampage from 40 years earlier. I've always been fascinated by the Manson family so this aspect of the book had me hooked.
I think Sarah Addison Allen and I would be great friends because I fall for all the guys in her books. This one, admittedly, had less of a sense of the magical to it. Or perhaps that sense was just more intangible. I missed the feeling that emotions have substance to them and the energies between people or between people and the world have manifestations. I wanted more with Rachel and her coffee and I liked the role that scent played, I just wanted a little more magic overall. But the characters were really fun and engaging - Allen's characters always are. I liked watching them evolve and have these revelations about themselves and each other and the way they related to one another. I liked the story and the way it unfolded, the sense of mystery and how they changed the character's world. You just can't go wrong when reading Sarah Addison Allen. People always say life is too short for regrets. But the truth is, it's too long.

I wasn't sure how much I liked this book while I was reading it (the prose can be unnecessarily flowery, and the narrator is not entirely likable), but it has haunted me ever since; I thought about it a lot after the Virginia Tech shootings. Not an easy read -- especially if you're contemplating parenting! -- but a worthwhile one.
