Full of unnecessary dialogues. Talking during the whole story about facts that took place in the past but never explaining anything until the end...when you find out the explanation is completely absurd. Her family behaving in a hideous way towards her, and remembering all the time her divorce, even when it happened 5 years before. She is constantly whining for the memories of her marriage and ex husband. I think this book is a total nonsense. The whole of it.

beautiful magical realism. i wish she would write more novels, because she can weave together her strong sense of social justice with a narrative in a way that moves you rather than makes you feel like you're being subject to a stern preaching. this book really was one that changed the way i think about literature.

Very well-written until almost the end, when the author leans too heavily on the diary of a man who lived through the dust storms. It's a good diary, and interesting to read a firsthand, day-to-day account, but it shouldn't have been allowed to take over as it does. Some might also find this book a bit repetitive, but given the subject matter, that would be impossible to avoid, and it gives the reader a small sense of how wearying living through the storms must have been. The author's decision to focus most attention on a relatively small cast of people spread around the region was a good one, humanizing the account. But the ecological, political, and economic themes that unite all the characters are also interesting. The book is highly readable, its language even colored by the occasional regionalism. This is both an excellent history text and a vital cautionary tale.

** spoiler alert ** 5 stars – Romantic Suspense The painstakingly drawn out and reluctant romance between spotlight couple Stan and Teri was extremely frustrating, but ultimately satisfying once he finally admitted his rather obvious feelings for her. The terrorist plane hijacking plot was terrifyingly realistic, especially the utterly horrifying scene of Gina’s beating and rape. It was so painful to read that I actually had to put down the book and take a break from it. I really hope that Gina and Max, despite her tragedy and their age difference, wind up together in a future book. The WWII flashbacks are a major distraction to the story’s flow in my opinion (just like in the previous two books), and I find myself just skimming through those sections of the book. I’m not really sure what it adds to the story except making it longer than it needs to be and taking away from the main action and characters. Sam and Alyssa...What to say about their love/hate, on-again/off-again cluster of a relationship that’s been brewing ever since the first book? I love Sam’s character and think Alyssa completely deserves her ‘Ice Bitch’ nickname and reputation. I honestly don’t understand how he could have any sentimental feelings for her whatsoever, let alone love her, after the way she constantly misjudges, mistreats, and berates him, but shockingly enough, he does. Even so, I’ve found myself riveted by them and rooting desperately for their HEA. Then towards the end, when it looks like they have finally reached an understanding and are making honest head way towards starting a real relationship, Brockmann throws out a doozy of a hope/HEA crusher and cliffhanger that’s a major letdown. Now I guess I have to wait until book six for the Sam and Alyssa saga wrap-up. So, despite the unnecessary and sidetracking WWII storyline and the aggravation I felt with both of the main couples, it’s still a terrific military themed romantic suspense read. 5 stars.

As I continue to work my way through the Oz books with my kids, this one was probably my least favorite so far. I still enjoyed it, but not as much as the previous three. Dorothy was as adorable and charming as always, and I loved her pet kitten Eureka. However, the other characters just weren't as engaging as previous books. Zeb was pratically non-existant. Although, Jim the cab-horse was rather funny. The story wasn't as exciting either. While it continues to follow the familiar formula of the previous Oz books (i.e., getting from being lost to back home), the sense of adventure and excitment wasn't as prevalent. I didn't feel like the characters were ever in any real danger this time. I have to add though, once the characters reach Oz, we have "The Trial of Eureka the Kitten". This chapter was my favorite, and especially well done. I read all of the L. Frank Baum Oz books as kid and I remember that some of the later ones were my favorites. I'm looking forward to getting to these with my kids.

The 48 laws of power. There could just as easily have been 127 or 5, but I liked portions of the book and found it extremely applicable to my daily life. The result? I have a hot girlfriend, drive a sportscar and fired my boss the other day, all after successfully invading a small oil-rich country. Just kidding. But as the book says, always engage the minds of your fellows with grand spectacles.

Except for the Goose Girl, which was really good, I think this is my favorite from the series. I guess maybe I identified with the main character, or appreciated the fact that she was a teen girl trying to discover who she was and the character was written well (and not like some teen who seems way too adult). I like how her talent wasn't manifested so outwardly, but was really something from within.
