I'm so glad that hobag died. Not really. It's hard to care about anything that happens in this book. I only liked whatshisface who had syphalis (which I can't spell, I know...).
This play revolutionalized modern American theater. It is at once sharp, witty, moving and fantastical.

I got this book from the library after seeing it for sale at the store, I couldn’t wait to read it. I think the writing was really good, and the story was entertaining. I could not put the book down at all, and it makes me want to visit Italy as soon as possible.
A very good introduction to Jesus as a teacher, using the best scholarship as well as the author's own experience to elucidate what it was that Jesus offered to his disciples before he died.

"The Revolutionary War in the Southern Backcountry" by James K. Swisher is a well written and easily read book about important historical events in the South during the Revolutionary War period. The topic is an important one in the history of the American Revolution. The English having found that they could not force a military solution to the revolution in either New England or the mid Atlantic states, decided to see if this was possible in the south. At the end of the Southern campaigns, it was clear to the English that they could not remain in the American colonies through popular support. This book tells the story of how the campaigning forced the English to come to that conclusion. The book consists of a set of 9 chapters, each telling the story about one important event during the period. There are lead-ins to provide graceful transition from one event to the next. This format provides a structure and boundary around what the book attempts. And, I think, helps greatly to make this book an excellent and readable history. Additionally, the author carefully chose when to provide details and when to provide summaries or overviews. I think that some historians might chafe at Swisher's informality and occasionally glossing over of details. However, interested readers who may not be as knowledgeable will find this careful editing a great benefit. I would recommend this book to any reader interested in the history of the Revolutionary War, or Southern, or American, or Military history in general.
Very interesting overview of socioeconomic and geopolitical influences on the relationship between Christianity and Islam. I plowed through this quickly to finish in time to hear her speak and wish I could have taken more time and should have taken notes. Ended up getting sick and unable to attend event in the end.

This story was so much fun to read, I laughed so hard I started snorting. Great characters and a really well written story. Don't let the stupid cover fool you.
Not certain what the buzz is about with this book. Basic mystery novel, disturbingly violent at times. Liked parts and dis-liked parts. Not interested in reading the second in the series.

It was an elegantly written book. The language was wonderful and it really drew me in. I would classify the book in four sections by where Jane lived: Gateshead, Lowood, Thornfield, and Moor House. The story starts at Gateshead where she was being raised by her Aunt along with her cousins who constantly tormented her. She was then removed to a girls school at Lowood. She was there for eight years since she stayed on to teach after graduating as a student. She then decided to better her situation and advertised herself as a governess. She gets a reply from Alice Fairfax at Thornfield Hall. This is where she eventually meets and falls in love with Mr. Rochester, which is really the heart of the story. The story revolves around loving someone in spite of improprieties or rejecting that love because of the improprieties. First is the issue of Mr. Rochester being both older and of a class much higher than her. It is also revealed at the wedding altar no less, that Mr. Rochester is married to a lunatic wife. Jane than flees and ends up at Moor House and lives with her cousins. Apparently there was no taboo about marrying a cousin since John asks her to marry her and join him in his missionary efforts in India. She refuses because he is clearly non in love with her. It is also discovered that she is the inheritor of a small fortune from an uncle who dies leaving his estate to her. After refusing John's last efforts to persuade Jane to marry him she hears Mr. Rochester calling for her across the miles. She responds by leaving and returning to Thornfield to discover what has happened to Mr. Rochester while she has been away. What she finds is that Thornfield Hall has been burned down by the crazed wife. The wife has died from a jump from the top of the building and Mr. Rochester has become blind and has lost a hand in the tragedy. Jane Marries him and takes care of him. There seems to be an opposition set up between being a Christian which involves both austere authoritarianism from Mr. Brocklehurst at the Lowood school and unfeeling devotion in the form of her cousin John, and the rapturous feelings of love Jane experiences with Mr. Rochester. It seems that it makes Christianity look bad with Mr. Brocklehurst or unfeeling with John, which are both distortions. Other than that, I enjoyed the book for its beautiful use of language and for showing how love can triumph.
