This is a very well written book about the disapearence and currently unsolved murder of a Iowa news anchor back in 1995.I have been to, and don't live more than a few hours away from Mason City, Iowa where this crime took place, so I had to read this book.Mason City is not the type of place commonly known for crimes like this. This book was a lot more well written than I expected, and I have read tons of true crime books.I didn't think another former news anchor( not all that far from where Jody was a news anchor) could write so well, but she did an outstanding job for someone who had never previously written a true crime book. The author of this book could undoubtedly relate to Jodi in some ways, which helps makes this book more effective, but beyond that, it's just a well written, well balanced survey of this still unsolved crime. The author of this book is a good writer, and has a lot of helpful insights into the story of this crime, and Jodi's life story. Hopefully, someday this crime will actually be solved.Maybe it's just me, but reading the story of this crime reminded me of Chandra Levy (and even JonBenet Ramsey) a bit.In Chandra's case, people jumped to conclusions and thought the married congressman she was having an affair with must have had something to do with her disapearence, though he actually did not, which blinded them to the real suspect for about a decade. In JonBenet's case, people were quick to blame her parents for her murder, despite the fact that is still unproven, and they were never charged.Sometimes the most seemingly obvious suspect (or suspects) aren't responsible. Who knows if this is the case with Jodi's disapearence, particularly given other evidence mentioned in the book, but as this book argues, it's best to keep an open mind, as the author presents different scenarios at the end of the book.Jodi, even before her disapearence was a public figure, whether this had anything to with her demise it's hard to say.She also made good copy as a true crime story, like JonBenet, Chandra, and others.Ordinary people, average looking people, don't make as good a story for true crime news, but when the victim was in life, something people view as a bit (or more than a bit) glamourous, like a child beauty pageant contestant, Washington political intern having an affair with her boss, or local news anchor, the story is going to be covered even more than normal. Jodi was another missing beautiful young woman with a future ahead of her, who found herself in the headlines for reasons she could never have imagined in her lifetime. She would have understood her life story and disapearence still make a compelling news story so many years later, though. She's at peace, if only her family and friends knew what happened to her and could find their peace too.I was only a child when this crime happened, so I didn't even hear about it until 2004.But it immediately interested me, and interests me even more now that I have read this very well written book.It seems to me that if Jodi had disapeared in 2005 more into the internet age, rather than 1995, this case would have gotten even more publicity, not to say that that would have been helpful in solving this crime. There's just so many things that could have happened to her, given her local status as a well known figure, and some of her friendships with people.Hopefully, someday, her remains will be found, if not the whole truth revealed.
