I had to read through some other reviews to remind myself of some of the details of this book, because it has been a couple of years since I read it. Several reviewers said the juxtaposition of the two stories -- the architecture of the Chicago World's Fair and the serial killer who set up shop in the neighborhood of the fair -- didn't work. It worked for me. I thought the sum of the two stories was stronger than the parts. I had known nothing about either the Chicago World's Fair or H.H. Holmes. Perhaps it's not an important chapter in U.S. history, but it's certainly a fascinating one, and Larson tells it well.

Interesting reading this classic again with a critical eye and 21st-century sensibilities. One could argue that Scarlett is a 19th century feminist, but other aspects of her character make her somewhat unlikable and unsympathetic. Interesting critical approaches to the book (aside from the feminist reading) is literature of trauma and the psychology of denial. I won't even begin to delve into the racism, sexism, anti-Semitism or KKK issues this novel contains.

Noyce has created a delightful pair of characters who, bored with the lack of entertainment at their Aunt's house on a rainy day, explore a barn and find themselves in a magical world where the balance of language and numbers has become unhinged. Ivan and Daphne are set on a mission to find Lexicon's lost children who have been lured away by dancing lights in the sky. Along the way the survive a plague of punctuation, the fog of forgetting, feuding parts of speech, a panel of poets and illogical mathematicians in the town of Irrationality. This delightful story offers readers ample opportunities to solve the word and number puzzles along the way. I look forward to additional tales in the series. Recommended for grades 4 - 7.

I did enjoy this book, but I have to say that having read all of James Herriot's books, the tone is very much the same. It was a fun, escapist read and the characters were well drawn, but if you've never read either author I would start with the Herriot.

What a BIG surprise! I bought this book mainly on the basis of its cover. It's cute! It looks kind of like a kids' book, about a big lovable dog. I was intrigued. Well, this is definitely NOT a kids book. After reading about 30 pages or so, I was tempted to give up on it. Since I had paid good money for it, though, and it was going to be a quick read, I decided to stick it out. And I am really glad I did! This is the story of Esther, a woman who is still grieving for her husband who died a few years ago, and Winston Churchill. It takes place over the course of a few days in July 1964. Mr. Chartwell, as he first introduces himself to Esther, is a big black dog. He soon encroaches upon her life. That is actually not his true name. He named himself that after Churchill's home. Churchill knows him as Black Pat, and has lived with this creature most of his life. The whole story was so intriguing I had to look up information about Churchill online to verify that some of the facts were true. (they were) anyway, the story was about depression, and how people handle it. I thought the ending was especially good and believable. My main problem with the book overall was that I just don't get British humor. I'm sure some of the odd things said were supposed to be funny, but they went over my head. I liked all the characters. Even though Black Pat wasn't exactly likable, he was oddly believable. this is definitely a story that will stay with me. Very well done about a difficult subject.

Started this last night- laughed out loud while reading the first page, but 67 pages into it, I'm disappointed to say that I'm not too impressed! I was not expecting her to be so foul. I will read a few more chapters in the hope that it gets better. And seriously- does anyone else think this is the worst book cover ever?!?

What will you give to be an American? What will you give to experience the American dream, to grasp all the prosperity and security and happiness that so many Americans seem to have? For Jyoti, a seventeen-year-old widow who lost her husband to the violence that plagues India, there's not a lot she won't do. Illegally immigrate? Sure, why not? Commit murder? Steal another woman's husband, and then leave him? There you go. As Jyoti gradually acclimates to the society and values of America, she leaves more and more of her Indian self in the past, and undergoes many transformations as she tries to discover who she is and what she wants. Duty and common sense compete with desire and passion; which way of life will she ultimately adopt? Oddly enough, you'll have a lot of sympathy for Jyoti. She's just a woman, trying to survive and make a life for herself...and will bring home to many of us, secure and smug with our prosperity, what many people are willing to do to gain the uniquw opportunities of America...
