Mostly, the charming style is what keeps you going. The book is decent, but not amazing, and I thought the story didn't quite deliver the adventure it promised.

ceritanya ttg detektif jack grant yang ngejar serial killer yang membunuh gadis2 muda yang salah satu korbannya adalah adik jack sendiri, emma.... ternyata setelah hampir 11 tahun terjadi pembunuhan dengan modis operandi yang sama..bedanya kali ini si pembunuh menggunakan website "DON"T SAY A WORD' milik abby conroy untuk memamerkan foto2 ce2 yang udah pernah dia bunuh... dan sekarang si pembunuh mengincar abby.... so jack melindungi abby dengan cara 24 jam selalu berada di sisi abby ^^ pembunuhnya bener2 kejam...walo dari awal kira2 bisa ketebak tapi kita gak tau apa yang melatari si pembunuh ngebunuh ce2 dan orang2 di sekeliling abby... dan ternyata alasannya sepele.....yah namanya juga serial killer, biasanya kan pada sakit jiwa ;p gw suka baca buku ini...gak sampe ada adegan boboan bersama, tapi arah kesananya jelas dan pasti....(tinggal nunggu waktu yang tepat hohohohoh) cukup aman di baca para teenager yang suka YA atau adult yang suka thriller romance ^^

Cohn's translation makes this 100-year-old book sound modern, which means it can easily be read by Americans. And it's funny - as in both odd and comical. Here is this short, mouthy, impulsive Japanese man (what?) from big-city Tokyo stuck in some god-forsaken hick town, enduring annoying ignorance from students and townfolk plus the two-facedness of the school faculty for which he has made up nicknames. Botchan is self-righteousness and thinks himself a tough guy. Readers have got to love gems like, "Haiku is either for masters like Basho or for guys like hairstylists. What business does a math teacher have fooling around with little poems about morning glories..." And then there's that one about Noh, and ikebana. Complain, complain, na moshi. Yet he cares about Kiyo, his old maid since childhood, finally realizing her devotion to him is a treasure. Such an odd guy, and how funny is this book. Okashii!

Like most of Mailer's work, this was exhaustively researched. There isn't a single conjecture of biography in the book that does not point back to accepted history. I found the central device of the novel (that it's narrated by a devil) intriguing. Mailer goes about describing in great detail how difficult it is to actually make a monster. By no means does he ever seek to excuse Hitler of his culpability in his actions. Rather, the point seems to be that it's as difficult to create monsters as it is saints, if not more so. Many readers and critics have been troubled by the frequently-scatalogical tone of the book. I'm not sure what they were looking for here. It's a novel about a devil shaping the mind of young Adolf Hitler. Flowers and moonbeams would seem decidedly out of place.
