not as scary as this "fraidy-cat" expected. (before you ask, i was forced to read it in the first place!)
I felt the book was depressing..but eye opening to how blessed we are to have the rights and liberties we have in this country. It also makes me feel more inclined to fight to keep those freedoms and not allow government to take over everything.

not the book on theology for which i was looking; but maybe reflects some home that some strains of evanglicalism is opening up.
At this point I have completely lost track of how many times I've read one or more books in the Harry Potter series. For a while I was re-reading them every year. Now, with such a long TBR list I feel a little guilty in re-reading things that I've already read, but lately I've been thinking back on some of my favorite books and decided to revisit a few this year. My original rating of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was 4 stars. I remember reading it and feeling that it was a little bit simplistic, with not much of a plot and relatively superficial characters. Going back and re-reading with the ultimate conclusion in mind, I can't help but be amazed at how deftly J.K. Rowling handled the overall arc of the story, even before there were 7 books. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jim Dale, and no sooner did I hear him read the introduction than I started to smile. This may not be the most complex book with the most refined prose or the most developed magic system, but the characters are like old beloved friends, and the overall arc does become increasingly complex with later books. Like Harry, the novels mature as the series progresses. One thing I particularly enjoy about this series as compared to other series I've read is that each book is complete and could stand alone. Obviously the whole is much greater than the sum of the individual parts, but I appreciate the lack of cliff-hangers which are annoyingly prevalent these days. If you can't rely on the merits of the series to sell your next book without ending in a cliff-hanger, then you should give up right now. (Even my beloved Philip Pullman is guilty of this) My children love Harry Potter. I have already read this book to my oldest daughter and both girls enjoy listening to audiobooks on the way to and from school. I'm happy to share with them something that fuels a love of reading and teaches the value of friendship, honesty, courage, and independence.
A (very short!) but enjoyable collection of eight fables. The fourth star is for the unbelievably gorgeous formatting and presentation of the issue, as well as the excellent illustrations for the individual stories.

I might not have learned a lot from this light-hearted romp through time, but I fell in love with TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DAY immediately and read it whenever I need a good laugh. Picture what would happen if you turned a 1930s RKO comedy film into a novel, threw in some crazy twists, added time travel as a major plot device and created endearing characters...that's just a taste of what Connie Willis has done here.

This is a good read for people who are afraid of non-fiction, as its narrative is interesting and compelling. I appreciated its glimpse into the varying cultures of Afghanistan.

From a list of SF classics I came across - this is one I hadn't read. Published in 1973, it holds up pretty well. There are some gender stereotypes that are typical of SF published during that time. I enjoyed this, though not enough to read the rest in the series.
