Enjoyable read, but the implausibility toward the end took away from the overall story.

Found this a rather fun and quick read. It was on the shelf at my school's bookstore so I figured why not. I gave it one star just for the premise about a girl who fell in love with her imaginary friend, and vice versa, and neither forgot each other. Another star for the fact that it was a quite short read. One because of the fact that it was written pretty decently and because it seemed a lot more interesting to me than the Notebook. The last star was because I truly did enjoy the book despite some glaring issues I had with it. That being said I didn't like the book for being way too short and that with such a great premise this could have turned out to have been a really wonderful novel if it wasn't so short, slightly too sweet and creepy at times, and the characters were expounded upon as well.

It's hard to say I *like* this book, given the subject matter of war and death, but I certainly admire Babel's writing. His imagery is both nightmarish and fantastic: "Fields of purple poppies are blossoming around us, a noon breeze is frolicking in the yellowing rye, virginal buckwheat is standing on the horizon like the wall of a faraway monastery... The orange sun is rolling across the sky like a severed head, gentle light glimmers in the ravines among the clouds, the banners of the sunset are fluttering above our heads." The gist of the book -- Babel was a journalist for the Red Army in the 1920 Soviet-Polish war. He was a Jew, posing as not-a-Jew, traveling with a cavalry brigade composed of Cossacks, who were brutalizing a countryside already ravaged by previous wars and previous soldiers. As I said -- I don't like the book, but I admire the writing and the way Babel composes each piece to create a montage of a horror happening to average people.

Not Hoffman's best but still a strong story about families and the ties that bind us (and pull us apart)

I was given the book to review. I liked it. Joe is a tough young tattoo artist. She hides her looks and how strong she is. She rescues animals and takes care of them fixes them up and finds homes for them. Hardly talks to anyone. She was sexually abused. Francis see hers and follows her and gets her to go to dinner. He lives with 3 aunts and you dont know what he does till the end of the book. the book was easy to read and was smooth in the story. you cared for joe and francis and wanted things to work out for them.
