Honesty is awesome and she really is gifted at weaving delicate prose into comedy - I love her writing.

As suave as ever, even when being duped by SMERSH.

OK, Michael Pollan has a point about how we (should) eat. But I found this book boring from the beginning to the middle and smugly self-satisfied from the middle to the end. It also makes some jarringly incorrect claims, including the claim that the lack of a food culture in America causes eating disorders (p. 301), and the claim that science has 'discovered' that animals have language (p. 306). Not cool.

I read this book about a dozen time. I really like the easy tone of the narrator, the subtly and the details. It tells me how people in authority are usually full of shit and unfortunately, not easily ignored. From the popular kid who thinks he is doing you a favor by letting you do his homework, to the mother who ignored her sick child so she could weep for the characters in the movite, the reader could learn to see through the thin veil of bullshit that authority figures sprout to keep other people lives miserable and down, and saying it's for their own good.

This book is dated by today's standards. It's Stephenson's personal look at the computer user interface, and more specifically, a comparison of the command-line UI and the graphical UI. The operating systems considered are representative enough (although those in common use have of course changed to varying degrees), and the arguments (doubts?) are still valid.

My favorite book in the series so far! It's like Tasha Alexander wrote a series with me in mind!

Three and a half out of five stars actually.
Walter Mosley's character EZ Rawlins is the flipside of all those LA crime noir books that paint the ambivalence and ambiguity through the lens of a white man. EZ has been solving crimes and mysteries since the late forties. Now its the 60's and black radicals are becoming active. EZ must navigate this new strident nationalism while attempting to find the truth in a series of brutal murders.

It was so nice to read a beautifully written book with actual, developed characters, and a fully realized plot after the crap I’ve been reading. I might be giving this book an artificially inflated review just because of the comparison. Really, though, it’s written extraordinarily well, with descriptions that leap off the page, and similes and metaphors that are not at all heavy handed or obvious. To be honest, the premise wasn’t intriguing to me, but I picked it up because it was popular and recommended and well thought of by people whose opinions I respect. Also, it was .25 cents at a garage sale. However, I was captivated by the lives of David & Norah Henry, their son Paul, and the Down Syndrome baby, Pheobe, that David gave up at birth. David told Norah that Pheobe died, and that secret influences their family in many ways. David’s nurse, Caroline, was told to bring the baby to an institution, but instead she keeps the baby and raises her as her own. As a reader, you are constantly trying to figure out how the secret will eventually be discovered. A few times they are so close your heart starts racing. The book spans more than 25 years, but is divided into sections approximately five years apart, and we are given a few chapters on the lives of each of the characters during some important milestones in their lives. The dynamism of the characters, while still remaining fundamentally trapped in their former lives and lies is stunning. For the author to be so genuine in writing the inner lives of such a disparate cast is truly an accomplishment.
