Very sad at the ending of this book. It made me cry. :( Otherwise, awesome. Better than 1st book.

I loved the characters and the plot kept me guessing. The intertwining story lines and the connection to the boys grandfather was also a nice touch. The audio was excellent with a reader who really gave that southern flair to his voices.

Several months ago, I saw on IO9 a small write up on this novel. while offering insights and praise, the review just did not grab me enough to seek out the novel. Last week, as I made my weekly trip to my library I saw the book sitting there. Intrigued by the cover I took it home and promptly read it in 2 days. Mr. Bacigalupi present s a very original vision of the future. Centered in Thailand, one finds the age old play of power, expansion and contraction, redemption and a mix of good and evil that presents the murkiest of gray shade in a world where climate change has occurred and humanity move on. His characters are at once recognizable to the reader but laced with motivations and insights that while hearken back to the Bard of Avon are freshly molded in this more then capable authors hands. I look forward to reading much more from this Author.

So, I enjoyed this book, but I obviously didn't enjoy it as much as others who gave it a full on 5-star rating (and there are a lot of them). In fact, I struggled with even giving it 4-stars [Update: I couldn't let it get away with a 4-star rating, so I downgraded it to 3-stars]. I enjoyed Verghese's storytelling, but I was disappointed in his characters. I didn't feel any of them were developed despite having so much potential, especially Sister Mary Joseph Praise, Hema, and even Marion and Shiva. I think what especially disappointed me was Verghese's use of point-of-view. It waffled, at times, and he never really loaned Marion ownership of his voice, which further delayed the development of this character. "Delayed" might be a stretch. He remained as flat as all other characters. Finally, while the story was interesting, it was sometimes beleaguered with unnecessary descriptions, especially of the medical variety, and poor dialogue. Shortening it up with less of these two things would have kept me in suspense and eager to move along with the plot, unfortunately, that was not the case. I found myself speeding through this so that I could move on to the next book in my library queue. This probably had more to do with Verghese's careless treatment of, and my resulting apathy for, the characters. Those are the negative criticisms I have for this book. That being said, there were things I enjoyed. I love the settings, especially when the novel is centered around life in Addis Ababa, but I also appreciated the theme of displacement as it moved to the United States, though I do wish Verghese further explored it and, especially, its toll on the characters (which would have required more character development). I also enjoyed the way the diverse characters interacted with one another, especially as they struggled with different types of revolutions within their lives, as well as the religious and spiritual imagery and philosophies that accompanied each character. Finally, I do have to tip my hat to Verghese for not shying away from some very controversial subject matter, not the least of which is female circumcision and the overall healthcare and medical treatment (and ostracization) of women in developing parts of the world.
This book, which I picked up for my husband, was a chilling and well done account of volcano research and tragedy.

3.5 This book was good. Very good, and I like it a lot. At first, for about the first 150 pages, I was kind of bored. There was no plot. Then thing got a bit for interesting. For one, we find out that Cassel is a worker. And a very rare worker. He brings Lila back, and they bust Anton and Phillip. It was interesting, I had to admit. Although when I saw how many pages were left, I felt kind of cheated. Only that much left to wrap up the book? Other than that, the lead made me want more with questions such as, how did he get on the roof? The ending also had the same effect, yet ended in a sense of resolution. Will Lila get mad at him? When will she come back to normal?

This is a really beautiful little novel with a repressed history and not nearly as much exposure as it should get. E.M. Forster writes a homosexual Edwardian love story and because of it's subject matter, the book isn't published until after his death. Reading Forster's own notes on the novel is also really interesting and I recommend those along with the book. And there's a happy ending of sorts, which always makes everything better.
