Story of Russian emigré Marina Buriakov, 82, currently residing in Seattle area. She is preparing for her granddaughter's wedding while fighting a losing battle against Alzheimer's. Stuggling to remember whom Katie (granddaughter) is marrying (and indeed that there is to be a marriage at all), Marina DOES remember her youth as a museum docent as the siege of Leningrad began(WW II.) Marina and her comrads have the job of taking paintings out of their frames and preparing them for safe storage so as not to be destroyed in the war. She creates a "memory palace." This young woman, while living amidst the horrors of war and fighing starvation (these folks are eating WALPAPER PASTE to stay alive!) memorizes everything, even brushstrokes, of the paintings she is deframing. It is into these memories that she disappears. This story shifts between the Soviet Union of WW II and the contemporary Pacific Northwest. You'll want to research all the paintings she so lovingly describes.

It would be much better if the author kept the book short and didn't tell the same things over and over again. However, that was the last book of a nice series and i enjoyed it.

As this was a pre-publication copy, and I know there are lots of pre-orders out there I won't include any spoilers - which is tough, as to best describe the book I'm itching to get into the storyline. It centres around the life of a workhouse orphan, Red, who ends up working for Moriarty - gets involved with Holmes and Watson, all in the familar surroundings of Victorian Britain. Or should I say the more realistic surroundings that were much more grim than many portrayals in Holmes films. It's a grat book for Holmes fans, but just as accessible for non fans as it's a strong novel in its own right and Red shines as the main character. As a novel, great. As a debut excellent and look forward to the next one.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. It rang true with me with relationships so I had a connection. Some of my favorite parts of the book were her discussions with Richard. Another author I'd love to meet!
Not my favorite Sookie book but I still want more! I am so excited to see what happens on the show "True Blood" because so far the books have taken some very unexpected turns!
This book was recommended to me by a friend. For about the first third I thought, yeah, this is good, but not head-and-shoulders-above-the-rest good. Then it got head-and-shoulders-above-most-other-contemporary-poets good, really striking, beautiful images, a few images that really just sock you in the gut, really intelligent poems, beautifully crafted. Smart and quietly searing, they really conjure an atmosphere, their own world.
good Scarpetta, up to the Cornwell standard

A classic in poker literature and a portrait of the World Series of Poker before it became the bloated, corporate shill game it has warped into. Not that I don't love it.
