I could not put this book down! Although it is a bit haunting, as far as plots go, it is beautifully rendered. I was especially impressed with the way Petterson was able to tell so many stories at once, without ever becoming tangential and following any story line other than that of the main character's recollections of his life. For instance, there is one particularly poignant scene that involved the death of a child, and the only perspective of this event that we are given is that of the main character. I wish I could write like that - but I can't even craft a very articulate review of it!

This is a classic - it chronicles the migration of midwestern/Oklahoman farmers to California after the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression through the personal stories of the Joad family. This book was very controversial when first published. It is so much - a history of the Depression, the plight of migrant workers, the union movement, the story of a family, and the ultimate humanity that can be found in the midst of despair. I loved it, and it resonated with me long after I read the final page.

Unexpectedly good book! Story was a bit tough to read at times, due to subject matter but I really enjoyed it in the end.

Hyperbole alert! I think this might be the best novel ever written.

I loved this sequel to Dark Divine and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment (which I believe is coming out this week or is already out). There was lots of dramatic irony in this one that sometimes made me want to take the lead character and shake some sense into her. But, I still didn't see the ending coming, so that was great.

Im actually reading The McKettrick Legend which has both Sierra's Homecoming and The McKettrick Way. I loved the first four stories of Holt,Rafe,Kade and Jeb and feel sad in a way that they are gone. I hope I enjoy the rest of the books as much as I did the beginning. :)

This is a very thought provoking book. How many of us would even try to obey God's commands in Leviticus for a month? As the author says, some of the instructions seem pointless other than God said so. Two lessons which really come through--the need for grace (as none of us can achieve holiness through our own efforts) and the importance of community in obedience. Most of us don't really want be a "peculiar" people and need the support of other Christians to really want to obey.

I liked the story, but the writing left something to be desired, I think... and (don't hate me) there were aspects of Gardner's personality that came out in his book that made him a little bit less of a likeable character for me. Not that I didn't respect what he did or how he helped himself and his son... he just came across such that his personality rubbed me the wrong way a few times... Anyone else who can back me up on that? I still haven't seen the movie. Maybe I should.
