Very hard to get into, but at about page 200, I was hooked. Finally. I love historical fiction, so this book - even though it has a gothic horror Dracula theme - is intriguing. Plus, I have been to some of the places mentioned in the book (Istanbul, Budapest) and find it intriguing from that standpoint as well. By the end, however, the book turned predictable and completely outlandish. It was OK, I'm glad I read it, but wouldn't recommend it unless you are really into gothic horror/history.

They said a good ending makes a great book. This is one of them. Never mind the sloppy duality, just hang on and stay till the end. It is heartbreaking.

I love this edition of the New Testament, mainly for one single reason -readability. Most Bible printings make them an absolute pain in the a** to read. I have a number of different Bible translations, and I absolutely HATE that stupid dual-column layout that's the printing standard for the majority of editions out there. After years spent searching for a nice, easy-to-read, modern English translation of the Bible with a single column layout, I finally stumbled on this one in a used book store (along with it's twin companion volumes covering the Old Testament). The way the text appears on the page makes such a difference. When a Bible's text is printed on the page like a regular book, it reads as a flowing whole. When it's printed in cramped dual-columns and crowded in by textual notes and reference numbers, one's reading of the text becomes fragmented. The only thing that would make this particular edition of the New Testament perfect would be if they had completely eliminated those obnoxious and distracting chapter and verse numbers from the text. As it is, this is about as good as copy as I could have hoped to find. If you can find yourself a used copy, this is a great one to own.

this book should actually get more stars than i gave it. it's a well written story that begs to be told, but there is only so much i want to know about the horrors people can force upon each other. i actually do recommend the kite runner, even tho i couldn't take the story. p.s. it was my county's pick for the book everyone in the community should read.
I've had a hard time deciding what to say about this book, because I reacted to it in so many different ways. I fault it for excessive use of acronyms and flagrant use of foul language. Also, it should have had an index. Still, it offers a fascinating, disturbing, sometimes entertaining, sometimes sad glimps of Iraq during the early days of the U.S. occupatiion -- even if it is told through the eyes of two 20-somethings who apparently were seldom sober and never free of the influence of pills. Not surprisingly, it's a dark, cynical, negative book. But there are glimmers of light. The authors encountered and wrote about Americans -- including some in the military -- who were intelligent, creative and compassionate in their efforts against incredible odds to help Iraqis rebuild their country. I couldn't help but wonder, as I read "Babylon by Bus," if it might possibly have worked.

I love it when Asians help reinforce Asian stereotypes! I just didn't like the stories. Seemed contrived and melodramatic.

I read this in high school, and I would give my memory of it 5 stars. Maybe it lost some of its luster when I lost my teenage angst, but I found it a bit self-indulgent and chaotic upon re-reading this time. I can appreciate the writing for what it was at the time, but I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as my memory of it.
Fantastic!

Okay, I admit it takes less than 5 minutes to read this book - but it really could change your life. Shel Silverstein was a brilliant man.
