This was an improvement over the last teen book I read. The title refers to a girl who has her heart broken, and coming from a Beatles obsessed family, she decides to start a "lonely hearts club" for those wanting to swear off boys. Fortunately, the story (and the club) becomes more than that, as it evolves into a club more about friendships, support and individuality, and even adapts its opinions about boys.

I was a little hesitant on reading this book. My daughter said she really didn't like it and I heard other people say they couldn't finish it. Well, I loved this book. I kept an open mind and accepted the fact that in the book God/Papa, was a black woman. We are taught that God is Almighty, All powerful, so why couldn't he show himself as a woman. I loved the story and it only took me a day to read it. I loved Papa, Jesus was neat and the Holy Spirit, she was my Tinkerbell. What a wonderful story.

This book was very hard for me to rate. I tried to read it and couldn't. Then I tried the audio book and I really enjoyed her reading voice. There were parts that I absolutely could not stand and skipped over. There were parts that I loved and wished that I owned the book. And I may end up buying a used copy to keep on hand. The memoir portions were my favorite, of course. It was a bit long winded at times. Overall, I'm glad that I took the time.

It's too bad that the rest of Don DeLillo's books aren't this good. I have a feeling that this novel will be dated in a few years, as some of the themes deal with specific fads in academia. However, the subject of the superficiality and hyper-mediation of American life is masterfully treated, and I odn't think that's going away anytime soon.

I really liked this book. It has something for everyone: action, adventure, romance, fantasy, etc. I received a copy of this from Sterling Publishers as part of the Goodreads first-reads programs and I am glad to have had the opportunity to read them. It was a series that caught my eye before, but I didn't get around to reading until I was chosen to receive the book. I loved the quests that this series has taken me on and I am really looking forward to reading the final book! *Please note, though I received a copy of this book for my honest review, that fact in no way influences my opinion.
Mildly entertaining story about the life of an alcoholic bartender and his clientele. The author's use of the second-person serves to interpellate the reader as narrator while the atomised, aposiopetic narration withholds any ultimate immersion in this identity: i.e. it is by turns attractive and repellent - a formal device which serves to substantiate a persistent moral vacillation (in the protagonist; in the reader). In spite of this, Ablutions doesn't really have much to recommend it: it is neither barbed nor witty nor weird enough to be memorable; caricatures of the bar patrons quickly become tedious and interchangeable; and the quietly desperate life of an addict is better portrayed elsewhere by others (e.g. Burroughs, Bukowski). The observation that this bar may be modern, ruined, morally bankrupt America in microcosm may be a desperate attempt to imbue the work with the aura of a rigorous conceptual framework but it's a non-sequitur: neither the book nor its bar contain multitudes.

I LOVED IT! FANG FANG FANG!
