Man, when I was a kid I loved every book so much...I'm still giving them all "fives". I wanted to live on the frontier, in a wild state of affairs - it ties in with the whole animal thing...

Really good book...makes you think and cry. Gives you hope...
So far, so good. I wish it had a bit more oomph but I'm hoping it gets better. It's a pleasant story and it's giving me a few hours of enjoyable reading.

I picked this up in an airport for the flight home without really knowing much about it, but I really enjoyed this book. It's about a young man's summer spent working for the circus back in the 1930s, but it's told through flashbacks because the young man is now 90 years old and in a nursing home. The story is pretty serious -- the main character in present day is dealing with dementia and just generally growing older, and the young man in the circus is dealing with corrupt circus bosses and animal abuse. Although the story is serious, it's captivating, and the author actually did a great deal of research on the early days of circus acts, so some of the more unbelievable happenings are actually based on real events. I would definitely recommend this book, because the story and the description of circus living are fascinating.

I was interested in reading a novel by a German writer/philosopher during the late 19th early 20th century. I came across the book Steppenwolf written in 1927 by Hermann Hesse, a Swiss/German writer. I had heard of Hesse and the name of the novel intrigued me. I was greatly disappointed. Though a pshchological, mystical creation (as I expected) I found it to be very dark, dreary and foreboding. The plot focuses on a fiftyish man by the name of Harry Haller who lived in a period of German histroy between the two wars (probably in the 1920s). Harry made a small fortune writing and, after an unsuccessful marriage and other amorous relationships, is now a shiftless loner. He is at heart an intellectual and disdains the bourgeois, though he himself appears to be a member of that class. He believes himself to have a dual nature: one high-minded and spiritual and the other low and animalistic, a "wolf of the steppes" (hense the name Steppenwolf). Just as he is contemplating suicide, he falls in with the artistic community and, through their nonjudgmental acceptance of him and the use of drugs, uncovers another "self". He embraces the hedonistic life thinking this will help him find his true nature. But instead he becomes even more confused and lost. The author plays with both reality and fantasy and suggests there may be little difference between the two. Harry's obvious problem is his total self-centeredness and pathetic conceit; he seeks solely to satisfy his own egoism and selfish wants and lacks any moral code. This, of course, is the source of his torment. Due to the demented philosopies of the German thinkers of that era, it is doubtful Hesse made the connectin between evil and misery. When Harry sought to become a "law unto himself" he forfeited the benefits of divine law, obedience to which is the only way to find joy, happiness and peace. The book has no redeeming qualities and I do not recommend the book to anyone.
I've only just started this book and am about 2 chapters in. I'm loving his politics and his perspective on the convergence of "old world" and "new world" foods, language, and culture.

Illuminates the depth of a game that doesn't get any attention for its wealth of complexity.

Good read! You can really identify with the characters and even though it's fictional it still has a lot of good historical information. Definitely a recommended read!

I really enjoyed the disjointed and circling narrative Morrison creates in A Mercy. While many of my classmates found this latest novel frustrating and incomplete, I was moved by the various depictions of bondage imposed by the self or an other.
