This whole series has captured me this summer! I swear there were days on end when I did only the minimum of work so that I could read, read, read. I was disconcerted by the amount of time that had passed between the second and third book. I spent a good bit of time trying to fill in the blanks. This book seemed a bit more pedagogic - more pedantic than the first two. Although I agree with her points, I'm not sure I like the influence on the story. As always, I had a hard time seeing characters change for the worse like Liam Kirby. I wasn't enthralled with Strikes the Sky. Sorry Hannah, I just liked Liam better!

The last five lines of "Steps" are quite possibly my favorite lines of poetry ever. I love that O'Hara's poetry seems slap-dash and harried, but is so beautiful and precise for all of that. He's definitely one my faves.

Girl lives alone in what was Central Park, meets boy and joins his camp. She finds out they are scavengers and survivors of a plague. After that, I just stopped caring. I couldn't push past the writing and honestly it just kept making me hungry with all the root food they were eating. I'd passw and would not recommend.

this book was a treasured favorite of mine as a child. however, i had read it so long ago that i really maintained no recollection of any aspect of the story aside from the concept of daemons and a slippery memory of the existence of the armored bears. that said, re-reading this book was like a fantastical trip to a world i've never visited before. i found myself so caught up in the story that i could sit for hours on end without noticing the passage of time in the slightest. i was brought into lyra's world so fully that it was sometimes jarring to find myself suddenly drawn back to the reality of my couch or chair or bed beneath my body by some startling moment of my present reality. there were many points at which i truly felt as though i was in svalbard or bolvangar, fighting alongside lyra and pan. if you've never read this book, i emphatically recommend it. and if you have in the past found yourself nestled between the pages of this amazing novel, i recommend revisiting it whenever you next have the opportunity. (you can borrow it from walker, i'm sure. :))

** spoiler alert ** I honestly didn't love the book! I thought there was way too much going on. What was the deal with the meth lab and the dog? What about Isabel's background? Why did Gruen try to make us think that John was the father of the green haired kid? I'm not sure why we needed to know the story of his first sexual experience. Cut the green haired kid, cut the meth lab and the dog, cut all the details on the porn star. Give me more on the bonobos and Isabel. I thought the scenes inside the Ape House were the most interesting. I wish much more of the book had been spent detailing their adventures. I guess I was just frustrated that it ended with so many random loose ends.
