This was really interesting. Loved the first 1/2 of the book, then it got kinda weird. Eddie and I listened to this book on CD on our trip to Oregon for Thanksgiving.
The title of the book 'Scared to Live' contradicts the story told.As the name suggests, you would expect some kind of mystery or thrilling plot, but the plot is not-so interesting once u have read it although the theme is really sweet. Its basically about a father who goes to an unimaginable extent to get back his child. Now if I reveal more about the novel, one would lose the charm of reading it.So enjoyyy....
4.25* Ok, I thought the first one was sad and a heartstrings-tugger ( is that a word?) anyway, I was wrong, that was nothing compared to this one. Talker is finally (forced) to really work through the trauma and pain and despair from book 1 and then as if that wasn't enough, evil incarnate comes back again to wreak even more destruction on Talker and Brian. Like the first book, it is told alternating between the here and now and the past. *sniff* book three better be worth it, I want a huge payoff for all this. Oh, and I speak from experience male rats do have HUGE balls, it's scary, but they really don't do well alone, Talker and Brian need to get Harry a buddy.

I read this book as I was raising money for Sojourn Battered Women and their Children's Shelters and looking for a text for college level trainings in child abuse. The women in group process could relate well to the reading and received some healing in part to the book. The book works well in conjunction with Kathryn Tull's video blog, The Next Bold Step and other domestic violence/ child abuse sites. Bass lacks deep training in psychiatry, psychology or any form of treatment for mental illness. This lack of training may result in therapists who adopt her approach leaping to conclusions that can cause harm, irrespective of her good intentions.

I found this book interesting...and also quite depressing. Wheelis is an aging psychiatrist who reflects on his very painful childhood including his abusive father and smothering mother. While he writes with vulnerability and some eloquence, his message of despair did not endear me to the work. (not that there's anything wrong with that).
