Let me just say I LOVE Kresley Cole's IAD series and I was really looking forward to Lothaire's story. But it just fell flat for me. The story went on and on, but nothing exciting happened, it was just the developing relationship between Lothaire and Elizabeth. Usually Cole's stories have so much excitement and action going on outside of the relationship element that I can't put the book down. This one, while interesting, wasn't a non-stop page-turner. And as much as I liked Lothaire as a nemesis in the other books, I couldn't stand him as the main "romantic hero", and I use the term loosely. He had no redeeming qualities as a mate and was constantly mean and condescending to the heroine. I liked Elizabeth's spunk and intelligence, but why oh why would she ever fall for someone who treated her like Lothaire did. Even at the very end, I couldn't see why she would want to work out their relationship or why she'd want to be with him at all. I never felt like I had insight as to why she fell in love with him, other than Stockholm Syndrome?? Maybe?? I rated this a solid three stars because I liked delving into the history of Lothaire, seeing him interact with his "friends", and learning about the Dacia. I, of course, liked the cameos by the other IAD players and I really liked Elizabeth. I also really like Lothaire as an evil vampire, his wit, his arrogance, his hotness, but his character just couldn't pull it off as the romantic lead. He just wasn't. He had a chance to redeem himself when he realizes something major (don't want to give away a spoiler, even though it's obvious), and I thought okay, this is it, then nothing. He just kept being a jerk. Overall, an okay read with some sizzling between-the-sheets scenes. Although, even those left me squeamish at times because I'm not sure Elizabeth was a consenting partner, so much as a coerced captive doing what she had to to survive.

3 ½ Stars This review is also published at http://thebookaholiccat.com The blurb of the book summarizes pretty well what it is about. Rivers of London (Midnight Riot – USA title) is the first book in the Peter Grantseries by Ben Aaronovich. Since I learn about this book I have been looking forward to read it. Couple of days ago I finally got to it. My first impressions were really good. Peter Grant is a very pleasant and likable character who discovers there is a secret magic world within our world, with ghosts, deities, vampires and many more weird beings. Grant is a clever man but he is easily distracted. He is learning magic but he can leave his XXI Century-self behind, he is always trying to apply magic using modern concoctions. This makes him feel more realistic. The supporting characters especially Leslie and Inspector Nightingale are nice and interesting with some twists and mysteries attached to them making the story a little bit more entertaining. The interaction between characters was fun and refreshing. The events of the book occurred in London. It’s obvious that Mr. Aaronovich is a local because of the knowledge of the city. The description of the places was very detailed, sometimes I thought it was a bit too much, especially if you are not a Londoner or are not familiar with the city, this can become a little bit overwhelming, like in my case, I was forced to look for a map of the city to get my whereabouts of the action. If the book had included a map this might have been a little bit easier. I had a big problem with the pace of the book. The first third part of the book was great, I was in loved with the characters, with the plot, with the writing and I was thinking I found my new favorite series. But after that third part it suddenly stalled and it became so dull I almost DNF. I hate not finishing books or movies so I forced myself to continue reading, I gave a 20 more pages “last chance”, if not I was going to closed it down and sadly forget about it. I’m glad I forced myself to continue reading those 20 more pages, because the last third part of the book picked up the pace and it became interesting again. My final though: Rivers of London/Midnight Riot is an innovative book, with rich characters, a very vivid world and three interlaced plots. If it was not for the pace problem I encountered it would have been a perfect book. I liked the humor of the book, it’s what I called “smarty” funny. When I was reading Rivers of London/Midnight Riot it reminded me somehow of the TV series Doctor Who and later on when I did some research about the author I learned he had written for the TV series. If you are a fan of Doctor Who, you might like this book. And if you are a Londoner or familiar with the city you might enjoy it more than me. I will read the next book of this series Moon Over Soho hoping it will continue with the good pace of the first and last parts of Rivers of London/Midnight Riot.

Pretty interesting account of a writer's year-long walk through the seasons of a Benedictine monastery and her experiences there. Not exactly what I thought it would be, but interesting nonetheless.

I wanted to like this book than I did. Some parts of the book were wonderful, 5-stars and others just put me off. The book was very lyrical and visual, I loved a great deal of the prose. I love the ocean so I was really pulled into the story quickly. At times the story was a bit hard to follow, and easy to forget which character was the focus at that moment but on the flip side, I liked that part of who it was written. I think I would have liked the book so much more without the sexual aspect. It just seemed out of place in the book in the context it was discussed. The ending was turning out to be so beautiful then all of sudden the dad gives his daughters boyfriend a box of condoms for his birthday. It was that kind of stuff in the middle of a beautifully written story that just threw me off. I loved the legend of the mermaid worked into the story and the author's description really made it easy to become a part of the story. Overall not bad, just not great.

At first I was stalled by the present tense narrative... it is so unusual in fiction that I needed to adjust. But this book is one of the rare kinds that seems to have just flowed from the pen with little effort. Nothing seems forced, the narrative unfolds as it seems it should, and the writing is unostentatious (see my review of The Emperor's Children), almost simple. I particularly love the central tension, that of Gogol rejecting his name and his heritage, and the idea that we all inevitably return to our roots at some point (a notion that terrifies me ). Most books, even some good ones, take effort to read. The degree of effort is a good indicator to me of how well a book is written, and every now and then you come across a book that is so well rendered that it feels like the book is reading you. The Namesake was one of those for me.

Unlike most of de Lint‘s urban fantasy, which takes place in his made- up Northeastern rustbelt city of Newford, this takes place in a made- up desert southwest city named Solana. Grace is a classic car/ hot rod mechanic and three weeks too late meets and falls in love with John at the Solana Music Hall. Like nearly all de Lint's work, the fantasy here is in the people coming together and making more as a group. ”I remember telling Conchita that I had no magic, but… I realize that‘s not true… We just don‘t pay attention to it. Every time we fix something that‘s broken whether it‘s a car engine or a broken heart, that‘s an act of magic. And what makes it magic is that we choose to create or help, just as we can choose to harm. But it‘s so easy to destroy and so much harder to make things better. That‘s why doing the right thing makes you stronger.”
