I enjoy the writing of this author so much. This novel is not a mystery or a thriller as many of his are. It covers personal struggles and especially the idea of "letting things happen" without making conscious decisions. The picture of Africa (Zambia) is frightening but informative as to the general atmosphere at the time the tide was turning for the Europeans who had farms there for a long time--sometimes for several generations.

I really enjoyed this book except for the section on rats. My fear of rats is well-founded:I have always feared rats climbing and coming up through toilets and it seems I have good reason - they can and do! Apart from that, I loved the idea of going from room to room and giving a history of objects, language and uses. It was very enjoyable as the book was full of interesting facts. It was particularly good on the nineteenth century which is a favourite period of mine and gave a great deal of illumination on how people of all classes lived.

Easily an early contender for the 2007 Asian American Literary Award.
Not truly "in their own words" but a good read nonetheless. I didn't truly understand Helen Keller and her story until after reading this biography. And I admire Annie Sullivan all the more for her sacrifices and devotion, which largely go unnoticed.
Despite Tolstoy's artistic status I had to be cajoled into reading this book, but found it to be a triumph of psychological realism. In the core idea of a fallen woman whose unfaithfulness in marriage leads to tragedy, Anna is more than an archetype and a warning about the destruction of passion; she is a truly complex, vivid, and sympathetic figure.

This was such a good book! While I wanted to finish it so that I could find out what was going to happen, I was sad to see it end! The first part of the book is split between the story of a woman in current times and this same person at 15 years old when she was kidnapped. The rest of the book is about how she is coming to terms with this past. I looked forward to reading this book and did so whenever I had a few minutes of free time. This one is definitely worth reading!

Not entirely uninteresting, but I got bored with it halfway and ended up never reading the second half.

I thought this book was very modern and not like your usual "Cinderella" story. Nothing was sugar coated and you never knew what was gonna happen. You think that this is whats gonna happen and you keep reading and it takes a twist that you would never expect. Its not all serious or funny or even romantic, Hannah McCouch combines an equal amount of all. I loved this book but the one thing that I thought could use some work was the ending, through the whole book it keeps you wanting more and wanting to know whats gonna happen next and the ending is just the same. If there is gonna be a sequal so that you know what happened to Layla, that would be great but the ending now kinda sucked. Other than that AMAZING book.
