I have loved Scott Westerfeld ever since my fiance forced me to read The Uglies. Although I delighted in the complex worlds he creates, I was often disappointed by characters written to appeal to the juvenile fiction crowd. Then I found this series. Low and behold Scott Westerfeld for adults! It's like finding an adult version of Harry Potter. Complex futuristic space opera world with characters I can actually relate to. Thank you Westerfeld. The only complaint I have is the cliff hanger at the end of this on is quite ridiculous. In the second book they have to repeat the last chapter of this book, just to orient the reader. On to book two...

The writing style is, of course, different and most of the time, I felt that Colfer was just making up thing along the way in a disconnected manner. Also, the long guide notes feels like it's another book altogether.

This book made me happy. It's the perfect beach reads. Forgive it's pedestrian writing style and cliches, and just go with the girly on this one.
I had heard of the book for quite some time but somehow never got to buying it. When the movie was out, bought it. A book written by a white guy which gave me an insight on japanese culture, traditions, some customs and of course, the initiation into what geisha aka comfort women was all about etc etc. Did not move me like it do some ppl when i read the review on Indian mags or WSJ/NYT as "mind-blowing".

Add this one to the growing list of remarkable books about the Holocaust. This chilling fable is about a young nine year old boy named Bruno who is the son of the Nazi Commandant of Auchswitz. He can look out his window and see the concentration camp, but he doesn’t understand what it is. He imagines that it is some kind of strange town filled with people wearing striped pajamas. One day, he meets Shmuel, a nine year old boy who lives on the other side of the barbed wire. They become friends and meet regularly. Bruno invites Shmuel to visit on his side, but Shmuel is afraid of the cruel guards and the punishment that awaits if he gets caught. So Bruno asks Shmuel if he can visit where Shmuel lives. Once on the other side, Bruno arrives at the camp just as a group of prisoners is being lined up to be taken to the “showers,” where they will all be gassed.
I had a lot of fun reading this book, not only because Mia and Kevin are the perfect match, but also because it was something really sexy, fresh, new and short.

I can really get into biographies, and while this isn't exactly a biography, the collection of essays and other items Tan collected here did tell her story pretty well. It was a really interesting read. One I think people would probably like even if they haven't read her fiction.

very entertaining & informative . . . however, i think i have od'd on the "locavore" genre and would recommend a michael pollan book over this one if you are going to choose only one. that said, the family element to this is sweet and inspiring and the included recipes are helpful.

What a horrible end to a good series. I loved them all up to this point, but I almost yearn for whatever fan fiction novel some 8th grader is inevitably going to write, finishing the series with something interesting.
Alice Sebold is an amazing author...but the story is super creepy. it gets weirder and weirder.
