I thought this book had the most vivid imagery I have EVER read. The writing was hauntingly beautiful . . . we rarely get a glimpse of life from Death's perspective. And just as he was drawn to Leisel, so was I. I do not want to give away any spoilers . . . but this is one of my favorite books to read in my World Literature classes - Markus - your words truly inspire my students!
:P أعتقد أننا -معشر الكبار- بحاجة إلى فهم مشاعرنا أكثر من الصغار ... شيء عجيب يسمى الذكاء العاطفي

My grandparents' ranch was located in a small valley in Little Cottonwood Canyon which is the gateway to the skiing resorts of Alta and Snowbird just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Our driveway led past a chunk of land which held the Jeffs homestead--you may recognize the name from the news--one of the Jeffs boys is on trial for polygamy. Anyway, we all knew that Jeffs was a polygamist, but we didn't know that he considered himself a prophet and that he had a huge number of wives. He is featured prominently in Under the Banner of Heaven. This book is required reading in my family--we are related to Brigham Young on my mom's side of the family (we were not raised LDS!). It is chilling to read the lengths these people have gone to create their society....I could hardly put it down. It was a good thing we were on a train heading East from Washington State--I had lots of time to fill! Also recommended: the HBO series Big Love...
I started reading this book as I normally do at 9 p.m. I always read prior to going to bed. Unfortunately, I couldn't go to sleep after reading a few chapters. You would think that if a book made you a little jumpy, that you wouldn't keep reading it, but I couldn't stop thinking about this book and so the next night I finished it. It was good. Ghost stories are kind of spooky to me, but this one was full of twists and turns. The story is about a boy who sees things in trees. His mother hated him and blamed him for her unhappiness and ultimate death from cancer. (Kind of a sad thing to think about that this kid grew up with a mother telling him, everything was his fault.) She dies and they move to a town for a new start with a step mother. The little boy is lucky in that his step mother believes him when he tells her about the ghosts he can see because she has seen them too. Together they help to eliminate a bad ghost and all of the ghosts hanging around are able to be at peace and leave on a bus. Kind of spooky, but very fun to read. Children with a good imagination will enjoy this book. I would recommend it to good readers at the age of 10 and up.
not for middle school
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Funny, eclectic and oh so true! Thanks for the recommendation Shannon.

Such a strong and complicated female character. Plus - who doesn't love surfers?
