See book 1, The Summoner for review
Excellent! Can't believe I never heard of this one before. Some shocking things to ponder re: state of American culture and lots of good ideas for voluntary simplicity.

boring is the first word that comes to mind when i think of this novel. i was looking for something similar to hush hush, but this isn't even close. basically the protagonist loves this guy she doesn't know, and she goes on and on about him even though he never talks to her, or does anything with her then randomly they love each other near the end of the book. its like i see a hot guy and follow him around for a day and the next day we are in love and getting married. totally lame.
I sounded like a good idea, but the author kept digressing into boring side stories.
This book was a tough slog. If I didn't like Conrad so much, I may never have finished it. The book really takes its sweet-ass time getting to the point! But Conrad wants us, like the characters, to question what the whole point of busting our asses doing whatever it is we do if we all just end up dying in the end. Eventually, Conrad gets around to providing an answer, but I think he wants the reader to fumble around in the dark for a bit. Some might say this should've been a short story instead of a novel. There are a lot of seemingly unnecessary passages of sailors talking about nothing. Lots of poetic flourishes about the sea. These things don't have much to do with the plot, but they really immerse you in the events of the novel. By the end, you genuinely feel like you've spent a lifetime with these characters. It's those long passages of mundane character interaction in the middle that help give the novel's final pages their emotional resonance. The effect is truly stunning. The closing chapter rivals the best moments of any Conrad novel.

Recommended by a teenaged friend - really fun and fascinating post-apocalyptic novel.

I'm beside myself with anger. I finished the book an hour ago, it's almost 1 am and I'm too angry at the turn the story took to sleep. I'll def. need plenty of cooling off time before deciding to continue the series or write a full review.

Made me cry at least once per chapter.

The short version is that I didn't like this book nearly as much as the first in the series, but it was still a good read and I continue to enjoy Douglas Adams' writing style.
