I first met the author at AWP in Chicago this year and heard him read these poems during a Kundiman panel. What I like about this book now that I've had a few months to digest it, is the movement - sometimes through grief, sometimes through memory, sometimes through a thoughtful analysis of the landscape. There may be snapshots here but it is not a still life in any sense of the word. It seems significant that the work begins with the word "you" and ends with the final word of the final poem being "home." There is a moving journey in between. Definitely read this one.
Every librarian in the world needs to read this book. It will make you laugh and make you cry. Lucy Hull is a children's librarian in Hannibal MO. She meets Ian Drake, a 10-year old regular library patron, whose mother becomes concerned about what Ian is reading and brings in a list of "acceptable" books for him to read. Lucy finds out Ian is now attending a day camp for children who may be gay and she believes he may be abused at home. One morning, she finds Ian in the library where he has spent the night and they run away together. As the trip progresses, the reader learns Lucy is running away from her past as well as taking Ian away from his present. Who has kidnapped whom? Ian wants Lucy to take him to his grandmother's house in Vermont and as they travel, Lucy discovers more about her father's past, his life as a Russian under Stalin and then his escape to America. How does it all end? How do you return a kidnapped child without being caught? How do you escape your past and find a future? This is a story about growing up and discovering yourself.

A really hard book to read, as it is a memoir of her deceased daughter. I would still recommend it since it is so good, even though its sad.

I'm having a really hard time calling this "historical fiction." This book is long on fiction and pretty short on history. Historical smut is a better description.

This could work for an earth day unit but not that exciting. They are both learning to share be citizens and take care of a park. It is a lot for so few words and it feels forced and not too interesting. AGes 3+

Another book that fell apart on me after so many reads. I loved Jo for years, ached for Beth, wanted to kill Amy and Meg I didn't really ponder accept as a really great peripheral character. I cried each and every time I read the story, as if I could make Jo change her mind and marry the boy next door....I still think she should have.

Though less mesmerizing than her international bestseller, Sarah's Key, de Rosnay still manages to captivate readers with this poignant slice-of-life novel. Though, the secret is rather thin and obvious, the fractured orbit of a once-happy family man searching for answers.
one of my favorite books of all time...wilde is tremendous the way he molds social commentary and wit, character development, and a suspensful plot together is sheer joy...read it too many times, and need to read some more wilde

Ms Ward is back, writing gritty romance with panache. I was afraid this might be my last read from her. BDB has fizzled, becoming more about the next book set up than the story at hand. Her Fallen Angel series definitely holds her creative heart. Rich, depth of characters and plot allowed me to escape to Caldwell for another great story. Ward has returned to the writing style she employs so well -- current, modern words creating ancient battles between evil and good. So glad she has set aside the overuse of hyphenated-words-conveying-emotional-content. Ward's world has characters reaping the consequences of what they do and 9 & love being worth of struggle. Can't wait for her next book!

This book just had too many dragons and running from danger, etc. Young boys will love it but I was bored. Getting a little predictable.
