I just couldn't get into this book, but I'm keeping it b/c I enjoy von Franz's work. I'm sure it'll come in handy for research.

This is soothing novel about healing and moving past survival to abundant living. It makes me want to head to the nearest river and learn to fly fish. The main character is a woman who is forced to find herself again after a bout with breast cancer. the story springboards from an organization called "casting for recovery" which teaches breast cancer patients and survivors how to fly fish as a therapeutic tool. It is a sweet story, a satisfying read. Here is one excerpt spoke to me: "Standing in the river with the water rushing at her ankles and the light of the fireflies in her eyes, she too felt part of the river's enduring flow. She heard gurgles and splashes as the voice of the river and she closed her eyes, listening. Let go and follow me..... "Stuart, I know what sickness is. That's where I've come from. And I know what it's like to be healthy. To not live under the shadow of cancer. That's where I want to be again. For the longest time I didn't know how to get from pain to well. I was stuck in this dark place, numb with fear. But when I'm in the river I'm living completely in the moment. Not in the past, not in the future, but in the now.Time swirls together like the water at my feet and I am standing in time and time is a river and i am the river." Even if you are not struggling with cancer, with divorce, with any hard thing, read this book. It will lift your spirit.
first-rate account of an idealistic, american jew and his earnest belief in the possiblity of peace. somewhere between journalism and memoir.

Great satire about writing & publishing. The main character is so slimy he is almost sympathetic. The beginning is stronger than the end though.

I've had this on my list for ages. Was hoping to like it but wasn't entirely sure I would. It didn't go exactly where I was expecting, but I loved it! Makes me want to re-read the Age of Innocence now...

Benbella's "Smart Pop" imprint puts out some great little gems for scifi fans who actually like to think about what they read (and watch on tv) instead of viewing it as mere escapism. The new Galactica series provides possibly the meatiest subject that Smart Pop's tackled so far. This collection of essays by a variety of well-known fiction and tv writers delves not so much into discussing the series itself as what the show had to say about society, religion, gender roles, authority, and what "love" means to a frakking Cylon toaster. As in any collection, some entries were better than others, but on the whole this compilation will certainly make your inner nerd tingle. The essays in this volume were written in between seasons 2 and 3 of the series (during the occupation of New Caprica), so it's also interesting to read what people were thinking long before the show's mysteries were revealed. Some were a little off the mark in their speculations, some were spot-on, and at least one of the writers who was an avid fan has since recanted because of the direction the show took in its latter half (but maybe that, too, was part of "God's" plan). Also recommended from Smart Pop: "Star Wars on Trial," edited by David Brin (for the prosecution) and Matthew Stover (for the defense).

Sentences are sometimes cringe-worthy in their structure and word choice. However...still very entertaining.
