I won this from Goodreads First Reads!! I really liked this book. It was well written and very intersting and it was a very good story line. This book is about how Cork and his family went on a houseboat to the Lake of the Woods for a vacation. The Lake of the Woods has thousands of islands surrounding it. It was a calm, typical morning when a huge storm struck. Cork and his daughter Jenny were together in a tiny boat when they saw the storm. The rest of the family were near each other when the storm stru When the storm struck Jenny and Cork were in the small boat, but they were relitivaly close to the shores of some of the islands. Jenny got to the shore of one island and waited out the storm. When the storm was done she searched the island and she found a cabin. Some of the cabin was damaged from the storm. she looked around and then she heard a noise from outside. So she goes out there and she finds a baby. She goes back inside with the baby and she finds baby formula for it so she feeds it. When the baby is asleep she looks around the part of the cabinet blocked from the tree that had fallen and she found a dead body. She leaves the cabin with the baby and she finds shelter on the other side of the island. Her father finds her later. This story is about how they get of the island and how they find their family again. Over all this book was very good!!!!

Book club reading. It was a good read, although I'm not sure it is something I would have picked up on my own. The overall premise of the narrator telling his story in letters to Wen Jibao was a bit odd and occasionally distracting. Eh. Good story-telling about caste, class, and life in modern India.

Many of the conundrums in this collection also appear in Dr. Gardner's Aha. Of the puzzles I hadn't seen, I was able to solve a few in my head, and a fair number were straightforward with pencil and paper. Many, however, require a profound insight of the "wouldn't get that in a million years" variety—one that I didn't feel at all ashamed for not finding. (Disclaimer: I have a BA in math and am a statistician by trade.) Regardless of the difficulty, the puzzles in this book are fair tests of intellect for anyone with a good grasp of algebra and geometry. There are no cheap shots that require an unreasonable, universe-spanning leap of logic like you find in some "mindbender" puzzle collections. You know, the kind that expect you to postulate the existence of a hedgehog wearing a leather skirt at the side of the road, or something even less likely, and then make you feel stupid when you give up in disgust. Those aren't puzzles—they're mind-reading exercises. I hate that shit.

A pretty sparse review of world football in the context of globalization. There are some neat insights though - in particular the sometimes contradictory relationship between capital, tribal identity and football. Too many of the chapters were focused on European football (taking brief pit stops in Brazil and America). This means that you missed out on learning about how the game is a metaphor for globalization in Asia or Africa.

GENRE: Urban Fantasy THEME: Magicians/Demons RECEIVED: Bought BLOG: http://seeingnight.blogspot.com/ REVIEW: Kindling the Moon is definitely one of my favorite new Urban Fantasy novels that I’ve read this year. Jenn Bennett does a fantastic job of creating a world full of magic, demons with lots of humor and a little romance. I was immediately sucked into this book and never wanted it to end. Arcadia or “Cady” as her friends call her is magician with a deep dark secret. Daughter of two magicians and murders, she changed her identity to start living again. Opening the very popular Tambuku Tiki Lounge, she lives a pretty normal life surrounded my demons and fellow magicians, and of course humans. But when the news announces that her parents have been spotted and are being hunted down, Cady will have to get help to prove her parents innocents. With the help of a demonologist with lots of secrets and a smile that will make any girl wobbly at the knees, she gets deeper into finding out about her parents past and what her powers really are. Cady was a sarcastic hilarious and downright awesome character that I would absolutely be a friend with. She a talented magician and may have some interesting parents, but when in a bind she would definitely come to help a friend. She really has to go deep down into the world she left behind and luckily has the help of a demonologist who has a library of every book needed. Lon Butler, demonologist is a very hard man to read and seems to love to frustrate Cady in every way. I loved his character; Bennett describes him looking like a sexy pirate and that perfectly fine with me. He’s a good support a long side Cady as they try and prove her parents innocent while dealing with demons, bounty hunters and a two-week time limit. I really enjoy the chemistry between Cady and Lon, humorous, spunky and sizzling moments, which made me, love this novel even more. Overall I really enjoyed Kindling the Moon, the magic rituals, demons with unique powers and a world where demons and magician existent was written perfectly. My favorite tidbits where all the spells Cady worked with, they were really detailed and intriguing. I highly recommend this book, a definite must read, with fantastic characters and plot that I’m dying to know what happens next, if only 2012 was closer! RECOMMENDATION: This is an adult book with some mature content, Fans of Kim Harrison and Chloe Neill will fall in love with Bennett’s writing and story line.

So much potential and so uninteresting anyway. I'd give it 3 stars but there were between 2 and 4 typos (I skimmed over the first two because I am kind and forgiving, but when I noticed the next 2 I was cranky and remembered page 212 and 290 to prove it to others)so it's getting rounded down to 2. Only recommend to people who really like hospitality/vacation industry books. Not nearly as raucous or humorous as the blurbs and subtitle imply.
