3/30/09 I read this book because I so loved North and South by the same author. I saw the movie version of the book and was unsatisfied with the ending. I couldn't believe that Mrs. Gaskell had let it end so lamely. Now I understand; she died before she could write the last chapter or two. But it was still a good book. (I'd have rated it higher, but I miss the author's ending too much). 10/15/11 I just reread this book after a long love affair with the BBC movie. I reread the book, knowing that the end wouldn't be complete. I was more able to appreciate the silly hypocrisy of Mrs. Gibson (she should spend some time with the Screwtape Letters!); the casual selfishness and kindness of Cynthia; the irony of the intent of Mr. Gibson's plan vs. the outcome: and the simple goodness of Molly and Roger. I still miss the complete, proper ending, and I hope that Mrs. Gaskell has it completed somewhere, to be read someday, but I appreciated the book much more this second reading than I did the first.

It is one of my top five favorite books. I don't love it because it is scary, in fact, I don't really remember being that scared reading It. Rather, I love this book because of the amazing relationship between the Losers. King describes their love for each other amazingly, yet also somewhat subtly.
