Although this one wasn’t completely what I expected, I enjoyed it. I knew this one was going to be Christian when I requested it, but then forgot by the time I received it. I don’t remember the description saying anything, and the back of the book didn’t, but I knew from the publisher. When I started reading, I was a bit surprised when she mentioned it. I didn’t think it was presented in an offensive, in your face way that I have seen it before. In fact, for the first half of the book, I felt it was rarely mentioned, and for the first 2/3 of the book until PJ actually went to church, she was really the only Christian character. PJ’s mom is a big influence on her (to her surprise), and it struck me that it was often her voice she heard, either things she said to her as a teen or through the book. This was interesting to me from the way the author portrays their relationship throughout the book. It bothered me that her nephew Davey didn’t speak much. I worked in Child Care for years, and never heard such a quiet 4 year old. =) There were parts in the book that PJ’s lack of common sense (like so many mystery heroines tend to have these days) really bothered me. PJ knows that breaking and entering is wrong. She said so. Before AND after. And yet, she did it. Twice. Um, ok. I guess the end justifies the means? The last quarter of the book became heavier in scripture. But it seems appropriate to me. Toward the end she started to remind me of someone. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Then at the end when she is standing in the park with the Cop (Boone) and the PI (Jeremy), it hit me. She was trying to be quirky, and fun, and a little sarcastic, and be in the good boy/bad boy love triangle like Stephanie Plum. Which almost worked, but it fell a little flat for me. It was kind of trying to reinvent the wheel. But maybe these 2 genres don’t mesh well. But if you take it for what it is, and not compare it, it’s still a cute story and an enjoyable read. And there is enough set up at the end, not to be frustrating, but to see where this series goes…

Beautiful meditations on life, god, and the human struggle to come to terms with both.

This book was ... interesting. I really only read it because my sister (hi, Bethany!) told me part of it was based in our hometown. Well, that was a bust, because it was clear that the author had never even been there - that she just wanted to choose a rich, suburban, New England town in which to set certain characters. Fine, though. I got over that. The writing itself was rather slow at times, and I didn't thoroughly appreciate the novel until the end. When the mother tells her story, and certain things are revealed, it makes the story much more worth the reading. I also love reading historical fiction because I enjoy learning about a place or an era that I am less familiar with, while at the same time absorbing a story (and not necessarily a dry history book). So I have to say part of the reason I gave the book 3 stars was because I really picked up a lot about Vietnam in the 70s - and, even, the generation which came before. I enjoyed hearing of traditions, foods, legends which I had not known of prior to reading the book. I love when books get me intrigued enough to at the very least read an article or two on Wikipedia to brush myself up on an overarching view or a time or place. The other reason I gave the book 3 stars was the shock of the ending - I have to say, even knowing that there was a "twist" coming, I did NOT see that surprise coming. It made the whole story sort of fall into place, and that I appreciated - I just wish the author had also endeared her characters and the rest of her storyline to me. For about 85% of this book, I often just felt like I was reading to get through it - and was frustrated that such a small book was taking me so long! However, I would recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction. I think it was well worth reading to learn as much as I did about both sides of the Vietnam war, and to get to, in a way, experience the conflict from a more firsthand perspective.

Good predictable fluff. Good for a rainy afternoon or a plane ride.

Picked this up in the bookstore where there were two English language choices, otherwise this is not my genre. The book introduced me to some ideas I'd never heard and I thought the premise was creative. However, it could have used some editing because she described everything and at times the plot was predictable and formulaic.
What a quick and entertaining read! It's really quite the romantic story. I couldn't put it down once I got into it and I can't wait to read the next one.

This book has some heart wrenching moments but gets a little over played.

This book tells the stories of several young people who, when they were unable to get the right treatment for their mental illnesses, ended up going to jail or prison instead. The crimes they committed were usually direct results of their untreated mental illnesses, and when they were treated as criminals and incarcerated, their mental illnesses became even more unmanageable. Apparently this is pretty common, and it shows how otherwise regular, happy families can easily find themselves in a nightmare when a loved one with mental illness isn't able to get treatment.
