this is a nice little book about writing. i got it for my birthday a couple of years ago and i was excited because of the illustration of the dog on the cover. i may have been under the impression that the dog was going to teach me how to write. this was not the case, but i still liked it very much. i should take another look at it one of these days.

It is no surprise to anyone here that I love graphic novels. Whenever a new one comes out, I can’t wait to devour it. Of course I try to be discerning about what I read, but when it comes to graphic novels...I gobble them all up! I picked up An Elegy for Amelia Johnson, basically, because it was on the shelf. I typically don’t like road trip stories but I thought I would take a chance on it because the illustrations looked interesting and it looked like it covered a lot of ground in under 125 pages. This novel met my expectations but, sadly, did not succeed them. Amelia Johnson is ding of cancer when she contacts her two best friends, Henry and Jillian. Henry and Jillian have never met before but they’re about to get to know each other really well as Amelia sends them on a cross-country journey together. Henry has known Amelia almost all of his life but fell out of touch with her when she moved to New York City to go to college. This is when she befriended Jillian who was her roommate at Columbia University. The two women forged a bond that took them through some tumultuous times. However, they both emerged relatively unscathed. It is Amelia’s deathbed request that these two friends travel together across the country delivering DVDs on which Amelia has recorded her last words. Once on the road, Henry and Jillian realize that Amelia may have had ulterior motives when she chose them both to do this task. They also start to question if either of them ever knew Amelia. This graphic novel has lofty goals. Any plot that involves deathbed requests AND a cross-country journey is striving a bit too hard to be sentimental and philosophical. I felt that the storyline was highly unrealistic and all of the characters were unlikeable. The emotional scavenger hunt to deliver Amelia’s last words did move the characters around but it didn’t help their development. It was clear from the synopsis on the back of the book what would happen in the end but even I was surprised by the amount of melodrama and cliches that were used. Overall, I think the illustrations were nice even if the story was weak. I think the author has room to grow and I look forward to reading his future works...but I may borrow them from the library instead of buying them. www.iamliteraryaddicted.blogspot.com

"Conquered by the Jao twenty years ago, the Earth is shackled under alien tyranny - and threatened by the even more dangerous Ekhat, one of whose genocidal extermination fleets is coming to the solar system. The only chance for human survival is in the hands of an unusual pair of allies; a young Jao prince, newly arrived to Terra to assume his duties, and a young woman brought up amongst the Jao occupiers. But, as their tentative alliance takes shape, they are under pressure from all sides. A cruel Jao Governor on one side, determined to drown all opposition in blood; a reckless human resistance on the other, which is perfectly prepared to shed it. Added to the mix is the fact that only by adopting some portions of human technology and using human Sepoy troops can the Jao hope to defeat the oncoming Ekhat attack." (publisher's description) Better yet is the politics of the conqueror and vanquished and how those merge into a framework for survival and a potential Jao/human empire. A fun read!!

This is an account of a Holocaust camp from the point of view of a polish communist. It's essentially the same thing as "Night", except the first person dialogue isn't from a Jew's point of view. I recommend this to anyone who thinks the Holocaust media forms they've witnessed haven't been shocking enough.

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I really liked this book! I was not expecting much, after both my daughters told me that they hadn't liked it. While I was at Borders, , during their 60% off sale, I saw the book, and knew the title sounded familiar, so I bought it. After bragging about it, I found out that neither had enjoyed it. I decided to look at the other reviews of it on Goodreads. Again, lots of negative things were written about it. But - oh well. thank goodness we all have different tastes. this is the story of Courtney, who lives in LA. On the first page, she wakes up - and finds herself in someone else's body - and in this other person's era. She is now Jane Mansfield, living in Jane Austen's England. And yet, she has the memories of a California girl. Needless to say, she has to learn how to behave in a different time period. I just found the story funny and fascinating - and I loved the whole time/space limitations question - can we actually exist in two places at the same time???? anyway - it was a quick fun read!

The biggest problem that I had with this is that it seems like a Harry Potter knock-off. But for younger kids that haven't met the boy wizard yet, it would be a great read.

I loved this book up till the end. Can't reveal any further till you read it.
My son is almost 4 and he's been taking a real interest in superheroes. He saw this book at a library and was looking forward to reading it all day long. When bedtime rolled around I looked at how long the book was and weighed whether or not it was too long for a before-bed read. But my son was so excited I thought "What the heck!" and went with it. Basically, Awesome Powers is a good introduction for kids to the character of Wolverine. It's likely meant for kids a little older than my son and is a good "I can read by myself!" book for younger elementary school children. That said, we had a nice time reading the book and since I'm not a huge superhero fanatic, I actually learned a decent amount about Wolverine. My son's attention was held the entire time, too. It's pretty straightforward and more of an informational book than a story, but it's not a bad choice for kids who are interested in superheroes. There are also a lot of illustrations, presumably taken from various comic books.

I remember being emotionally impacted by this book. It really haunted me. I’ve always loved kids and animals and underdogs, and this book was about them. Great story.
