1. What is the book mostly about? Thomas Alva Edisons' life as an inventor. 2. What is a fact from the biography? Thomas Edison invented the incandescent lightbulb. 3. What happened after he died? His lightbulbs had to be shut off wherever it was used in New York City. 4. Thomas Edison died at age 84 because... he suffered from alot of diseases. 5. How are Edisons' inventions different from Bells' inventions? Bell invented the telephone and Edison invented the lightbulb. 6. Predict what will happen if people don't use Edisons' lightbulb anymore. There will probably be another new and better lightbulb being produced. 7. From the picture on page 44 you can tell that sketch means... A quick drawing that doesn't include much details. 8. From the book, you can tell that... the lights before the incandescent lightbulb were really dangerous. 9. What is an opinion from the book? Al is a curious child. 10. What is the author's purpose for a timeline? To show a scheldue of his life that can be easily to under stand. 11. You can tell the word "wrote" on page 30 means... print 12. Visually I found this so appealing. In autumn, when the other leaves fall, Little Yellow Leaf holds on. Berger's art is so interesting and full of movement - a challenge when you consider that the story itself doesn't have much action! I like the ending, too - sometimes you need a friend to let go with you.

Man, I love this book. It was my first introduction to epistolary fiction, and it's just so adorable. Now the fact that she called her romantic interest Daddy throughout the entire book wigs me a bit, and Jervis is so high-handed and lacking in candour that I'm deeply suspicious of him, but I'm gonna put down Judy's trilling that he's right most of the time because he's years older than her to the mushy-brainedness of the first flush of love, and believe that she's going to be able to handle him. Still, the whole love subplot, Pygmalion and Galatea, is dodgy in the extreme. I like the romance subplot in the sequel-of-sorts Dear Enemy better, but that book has lots of other dodgy things. Things I didn't like when I read this as a wee kidlet: Jervis? What the hell kinda name is that for your romantic interest? Sheesh. When the only nickname you can come up with is Jervie, you know, you might wanna consider changing the name. Things I liked back then, and still like now: Judy's resolute independence. Her delight in the books she's catching up on, which everyone else has read: Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes, etc. etc. The letter about Pepys, because that was the first time I'd ever heard of the dude. The doodles. The digressions on clothes. Coming to it fresh now I think I'd probably find it a little precious, but I can't imagine not being charmed by Judy's spirit and sense of humour.

I read this in the midst of my own "early, temporary retirement" so it was rather fitting. It's witty and a quick-read...I'd recommend for a nice little escape.

Surprisingly readable, considering how dry and academic it could have been. Instead, it's both intelligent and accessible, and my only real complaint is that since it was published over a decade ago it's missing a lot of important modern horror films. Otherwise, highly recommended.
