A long time ago I read a review of "Leaving Las Vegas" in The New Yorker. The reviewer described how entertaining it was to see Elisabeth Shue imitate the gestures and speech of an actor. Because she didn't actually know how to act, she did her best by vaguely waving her hands around in the way she thought an "actor" would. This is pretty much how I felt about reading this book. Allen has no idea how to write a magical realist novel, so she just apes what she thinks "magical realism" is. Of course, the final product is heavy-handed, clumsy, and predictable. Fortunately, the book often fell into the "it's so bad it will make you laugh" category. So, I did laugh. Although I was also enraged at having lost several hours of my life to this novel.

a very fast read because the writing is good and the story too. kind of a flashback to the 80's in a way, but it moves right along. a great way to spend a lazy rainy night which continued on into the midafternoon

Anyone who wants to understand the bigger picture of immigration from Latin American countries should read this. Amazing.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I had several friends who raved about it. In the end it was pretty good, but I don't see myself reading any further than this one (even though I did purchase all the sequels that were out at the time--four, I think?) for one main reason. I know that this is a really personal reason, though, and don't expect it to sway anyone else--I just couldn't get past Claire's "oh, well, life goes on" attitude about losing (literally, or at least more so than the usual way) her husband due to the whole time-travelling issue. She bounced back waaaay to quickly from that and moved on with far less guilt than I was comfortable with. But, as I say, that's just me. Lots of people love the series, obviously.

It was an eye opener for me at first I didn't want to read it. My book club had picked it and I enjoyed it. I just saw the movie and thought they did a good job as well but, of course, the book is always better.

I love Suzanne Brockmann. I hit a rough patch, felt blue, and read all the books of hers I had on hand. Highly recommended. She's fab :)

Another waste of time. Either read the actual Oz books or A Barnstormer in Oz.
