This book wasn’t bad but the suspense part read a bit like fantasy. It had a really good premise but to make an exciting plot, the author had the killer doing things that would be impossible to execute without time traveling or teleporting. This serial kills young women with their biggest fears. The premise is really interesting and some of the kills are bound to connect with readers’ fears – just by reading some of the descriptions, my heart was pounding and my breathing accelerated as if I was going to get a panic attack. But the way the killer found out about his victim’s fears gave me my first WTF moment: via computers! Of course! Because I’m sure everybody mentions their biggest fear on their Facebook profile even if the event that triggered the fear happened pre-Internet days. And not only is the killer a computer genius, he’s a crack-shot, amateur psychologist, skilled at forensics, expert actor with no accent (because Southern people don’t have an accent you know), snake wrangler (for real) and time bender. Because to kidnap and kill several people executing elaborate deaths that would take time to plan and implement properly, follow FBI agents around, work his job, destroy evidence and plan the next murder, all in a span of a few days without being detected in a small town where people are bound to notice every little thing you do, you must be able to bend time or live in an alternate universe where days have 48 hrs. The investigative area of the book left much to be desired. There’s a thing called the FBI method of profiling which the agents in this case barely followed. They didn’t interview one person who was related to the victims to figure out if they saw something, etc. There wasn’t even an actual profile! (As in detailed information regarding the killer's demographic characteristics, education, etc.) All we know is that the heroine ‘thinks like a killer’ but she’s always a step behind him, not ahead. BTW…I don’t know how the heroine could hold that job. Given her past, she was psychologically compromised so any halfway decent defense lawyer could discredit her in court. No matter how good, I doubt the FBI would put somebody like her to lead anything. The hero was hot but not a very good FBI agent. He’s caught with his pants down almost every time something is happening. He’s not a wimp but he’s too emotional and tends to forget his surroundings. Not the best person to have around when you are trying catching the killer. I’m definitely not continuing this series but I’ll give the author another try. Next time, though, I’ll keep to her paranormals because I’ll know from the start that what I’m reading is fantasy.

You will probably figure the ending out without too much trouble - but the getting there will give the ride of a lifetime. I can't tell you how many times I put this book down and immediately picked it back up again, saying that I would read just one more chapter. Laurel Shields wakes up one morning and takes a home pregnancy test and finds she is pregnant, but there is a strong possibility that the father is not her husband, Dr. Warren Shields. The father could possibly be, Danny McDavitt, who is unhappily married and the father of a challenged boy. Dr. Warren has a practice with fellow doctor, Kyle Auster, who has been cheating Medicare with the help of his office manager, Vida Roberts. The FBI is auditing their books and Kyle and Vida plant damaging information on Dr. Warren trying to make him the fall guy. Dr. Warren, who has a problem of his own, turns from being mild mannered and a caring person to one who is mistrusting and volatile. He is tipped off to the planted information and in searching for it; he finds a love letter written to his wife. He now holds his wife and children hostage as he tries to find out who her lover is. The action is racheted up a notch when Dr. Warren's house is surrounded by sheriff deputies that are short on handling hostage situations. They are faced with trying to resolve the situation before nightfall and how to subdue Warren without endangering his wife and children. The action takes place in one day and I cannot remember a book that packed so much intensity in such a small time frame. You will find yourself racing from page to page trying to find out what is going to happen next.
