I am reading this for my book group - which always makes me stretch in terms of my choices. Mary Oliver is a close observer of nature and is a poet. Neither very comfortable for me but I am working on it. Here is a sample of her thoughts that I like very much:"What does it mean that the earth is so beautiful? And what shall I do about it? What is the gift that I should bring to the world? What is the life I should live?"

This book changed my life in so many ways, and I've read it many times, starting in 1987. Although for an introduction to Bo Lozoff, I might recommend his more recent book, Deep & Simple, first.

Parts of the book are brilliant and most of it is enjoyable. I didn't realize what it would be like to experience hour after hour of these stories, however; you feel as though you're bathing in embarrassment, or being held up to the ridicule of teachers, music instructors (shudder) and much of Paris for days. I was grateful eventually to throw in the towel and slink away; I'll look forward to his stories on NPR very much, and be content with small doses of insight mixed into my relatively non-humiliating real life.

will not change your life as more serious literature may, but this is my kind of book: fast-paced mystery, international intrigue, drama, murder, use/misuse of political power - the plot of a good action movie. enjoyable, as good as grisham in my opinion.

Interesting story of two girls with parallel lives. Alex's brother has died and she feels at fault. Trying to cope with her grief and that of her mother and father is not working. She is taking to Paris with her Nobel Prize winning scientist dad to work on a school project that must be completed in order to graduate. Alex discovers a diary of another girl, Alex, who is writing of her experiences in the French Revolution. This Alex is a care provider for Louis Charles X during the French Revolution. Details of the revolution were riveting. The description of the catacombs was amazing and frightening. I did find the story confusing at times as to what was present day and what was many years before. A good story of the struggle to deal with grief, family break-ups, mental health issues, and life in general. I believe that it is geared more to high school than middle school students because of some of the themes in the story.

Kelly Hunter is fast becoming a favourite HP author, next to Mira Lyn Kelly. Another five star read from her. I liked both Madeline & Luke, and the way that their issues are real, not ridiculous ones, that most RL people would solve in 10 seconds flat. The way that Luke had troubles with Madeline's wealth and her issues with his rather dangerous job, is something that I understand. Luke's relationship with his brother, Jake, is great, and I love his patience when dealing with Po, Jake's apprentice (especially the scene with the toaster). And the book is set in Singapore, rather unusual, there are a plethora of books with Greek, Spanish tycoons, so we "see" a lot of those countries, so this is a nice change. Here's a shot of the city:

Vladimir Nabokov is one of the most interesting people I've ever read about and his biography supplements the book well. Many people assumed he was a pedophile himself after he published this book, he even tried to burn his only manuscript when he realized how he would be thought of. So basically, even Nabokov realized he wrote this too well. The language is amazing - there are travel scenes comparative to 'On the Road'
This book is taking forever to finish. Ugh.

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit, maybe more than Assassination Vacation, but then I'm fascinated by religious semantics. Like David Sedaris, Vowell is more entertaining to listen to than read, but I found some of the switching back and forth between Vowell's narration and the voice acting a little awkward, although it would have been worse I guess if she had just read the entire thing straight through.
