This cookbook is nice because I have zero creativity when it comes to cooking. The meals are a little expensive but the serving sizes are large and the food lasts for days. I don't know though, that it has inspired me to buy any other Rachel Ray cookbooks.

When I stray from White Noise I don't think about it that much. Every time I read it, though (maybe every few years) I think, this is the best book ever written. The only other book I think about that is The Great Gatsby. It pales in memory. You forget why you needed it or why it was so good. It seems like a cliche. Everyone says these books are fantastic but nobody can drum up a concrete reason why. It's as if we don't hold onto the specificity of the details in memory. We remember their importance culturally and that turns us off, the way you read books for their "issues" in university cultural studies classes that aren't very engaging. Last time I read White Noise I fell apart over the scene in the grocery store; the rush of being a consumer. I think it's the most dangerous and right-on evocation of anything in our world, in spite of everything.

I enjoyed this book. There was nothing totally substantial about it, but I liked the character interactions and I was hooked from the beginning. It was a very nice airy summer read.

This was my introduction to Hunter S. Thompson, and if you aren't familiar with him already, this is a good place to start. This is a collection of his correspondence from 1955-1967, covering his young adulthood. I felt I got a real idea of who Thompson was through this book, and he's still a realistic, likeable person throughout this era, before he gets really extreme. Don't get me wrong, I love the Fear and Loathing-era Thompson's writing as well, but this is a fun little "portrait of the artist as a young man" so to speak.

I thought this was interesting but not thought provoking--just sad! But it lead me to The Last Witchfinder which I loved for it's adventurous and intellectual approach.
I only tried this one because I loved her book on Seabiscuit. The first 80 pages kind of dragged and I skimmed over much of the background on the secondary characters, but once it started into the story, it was riveting and I could barely put it away. The writing and story telling was totally top notch and impeccable research. Any fiction has a hard time competing with real life stories. It really is a story of survival, resilience and redemption.

A re-read, but riveting all the same as it's been years since I last picked it up. I think the earlier books in the Scarpetta series are by far the best.
