This is a great book about life and what we, as humans, think we need. read it many years ago; can't find my copy now. will be reading again in the near future.

Although at first the use of the southern dialect/syntax was a little hard to follow - I came to love these characters and particularly the female lead as she comes to value herself and recognize her desires. Beautiful Beautiful woman!

Pretty good! It's a supernatural James Bond.
Deservedly a classic of world literature, Don Quixote is many things--a farce, a comedy, an adventure, a tragedy, a metaphor for the human condition... Much of the humor still holds up after all this time--particularly the low comedy, like slapstick humor (the book also has its share of more subtle satire and situational comedy, some of which I'm sure was lost on me). To fully appreciate it, though, you need to have some understanding of the kind of book Cervantes was parodying--the medieval chivalric romance, and specifically the lower-quality ones (which, for obvious reasons, are particularly hard to come by, especially in English translation). I read "Le Morte d'Arthur" and "Song of Roland" prior to reading "Don Quixote," and I believe this greatly increased my appreciation. All in all, an enjoyable read, although by no means a sublime one. The characterization in Part I is a little thin, and there are several lengthy digressions of varying quality. Cervantes also comes across as rather full of himself at times; more on that in my review of Part II.

I loved this book as a kid. Of course I will always remember the Twilight Bark, the sheepdog and the escape from Hell Hall, and the delightful English-ness of it all, but most of all, this books makes me want buttered toast.

Fun Regency romance, and made especially so by the cute ways she gets English sayings wrong. I can absolutely relate, being Malaysian. My English is good enough to be native, but once in a while you can tell, as my husband loves to remind me. >_<

This book made me shudder and cry and wish that humans were a better lot of animals. It's like reading Charlotte's Web meets The Jungle. Definitely not one for the faint of heart. If you are interested in reading a novel about the meat industry, where the meat is children with low IQ's, this one's for you. If you don't like depressing reads or long footnotes, it's not for you. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of going organic with their diet, vegetarian, or vegan, though. And for anyone interested in animal rights issues and quality of life or issues of human genetics/designer test tube babies. It certainly doesn't paint a bright picture about humanity as a whole. I will be blogging a longer review in my usual book review post entitled: What Are You Reading Between the Covers? http://norabpeevy.blogspot.com/2011/0...

"The Shanghai Moon" is a necklace that is purported to be of some value. Lydia Chin, a Chinese investigator, is asked to look into its disappearance and possible recovery. Lydia is estranged from her partner, Bill Smith, since their last investigation. Bill has taken time off to sort through problems that were caused by that invesitgation. Lydia finds herself deeply involved in finding "The Shanghai Moon" , but more deeply involved in the life of Rosalie Gilder. Rosalie was Jewish, German, and escaping Nazi Germany. Rosalie finds herself aboard ship and becoming entranced by a Chinese Nationalist, Chen Kai-Rong. The relationship leads to marriage and Chen fashioning a necklace to be called "The Shanghai Moon". This became one of the most sought after pieces of jewelry, when it disappears. Its disappearance is coupled with Mao's takeover of China and Chiang Kai-shek's retreat to Taiwan. The story is steeped in the history of China and follows a family's flight from China to the United States. This is a very good read with plenty of twists and turns to keep your interest. There are a lot of characters to keep track of with similar names. The story also receives most of its mystery from letters that were written from Rosalie to her mother back in Germany. The reader should enjoy not only the historical aspect of the book, but also the ongoing culture of the Chinese people.
